"Prisoners, Lovers, and Spies: The Story of Invisible Ink"
Reading/Book Signing
Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 7:00pm
Carter Presidential Library & Museum Theater
Free and Open to the Public
Prisoners, Lovers, and Spies is a book about concealing and revealing secret communications. It is the first history of invisible writing, uncovered through stories about scoundrels and heroes. Dr. Macrakis combines a storyteller’s sense of drama with a historian’s respect for evidence in this page-turning history of intrigue and espionage, love and war, magic and secrecy. From the piazzas of ancient Rome to the spy capitals of the Cold War, Macrakis's global history reveals the drama and importance of invisible ink. From Ovid’s advice to use milk for illicit love notes, to John Gerard's dramatic escape from the tower of London aided by orange juice ink messages, to al-Qaeda’s hidden instructions in pornographic movies, this book presents spellbinding stories of secret messaging that chart its evolution in sophistication and its impact on history. An appendix includes fun kitchen chemistry recipes for readers to try out at home.

For the fourth consecutive year, Tech students have the opportunity to contribute to and award a group gift to the campus project they deem most worthy.
The gift's sum is a fluid number, as it includes $5 from every SAA member and a matching gift from alumnus Walt Ehmer (IE 1989). A team of SAA students compiled the list of potential recipients and worked with them to fine-tune the specifics of what the gift would fund in each area. The annual Gift to Tech program from the Student Alumni Association (SAA) lets students vote for which project will earn a bounty of more than $30,000. The gift is meant to provide a way for students to start giving back to Tech while still on campus.
This year’s potential beneficiaries represent the many varied interests of Tech students, including bicycle infrastructure, campus safety, an outdoor concert series, solar-powered electricity stands, tradition plaques, Tech's new Campus Kitchen, and the Student Government Association's Buzzinga competition. Full descriptions of how the funds would be spent for each are available at SAA’s website. Last year, $28,000 went to the Georgia Tech Band.
All currently enrolled students have until March 14 to cast a vote; they must log in to vote at gtsaa.com/vote with their Georgia Tech username and password. Voting will reopen on March 24 to SAA members only. Each member can cast one more vote for one of the top three projects from the first round of voting. Faculty and staff are not eligible to vote.
The 2014 Gift to Tech will be announced the week of April 14, with a celebration and presentation at the Kessler Campanile on April 17 at 11 a.m.

Every year, Georgia Tech’s campuswide and major-specific career fairs draw hundreds of employers and thousands of students looking for just the right fit, whether it’s for a permanent, co-op, or internship position.
Students who want to nail the interview and land the job can prepare by taking advantage of mock interviews, resume blitzes, seminars, etiquette dinners, workshops, and more, where professionals from business and industry, their college, or Georgia Tech’s Center for Career Discovery and Development share their guidance and expertise.
But what advice might students have for other students when it comes to making the most of Georgia Tech’s many face-to-face job search opportunities? How do they manage the pitfalls of personal appearance, the intimidation of the interview, the hazards of the handshake, the night-before nerves? We went to the floor of Georgia Tech’s biggest Career Fair to find out… See what students have to say at www.news.gatech.edu/features/career-fair.

The Office of the Registrar is reminding you of the Board of Regents policy requiring students to complete their Math and English requirements according to the benchmarks below:
Effective for freshman entering Fall 2010, students who have earned 60 hours but have not completed Areas A1 (English--ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102) or A2 (Math--MATH 1501 or MATH 1712) must enroll in the next course necessary to make progress toward completing this Area in every semester in which they take classes.
Effective for freshman entering Fall 2011, this hour limit is lowered to 45 hours.
Effective for freshman entering Fall 2012, the hour limit is lowered to 30 hours.
If students are not meeting these benchmarks, they must register for the next course necessary to make progress toward completing their degree during Phase I registration. If students are out of compliance and do not register for the course during Phase I registration, we will register them for a course for the Fall term. The Registrar’s Office will send email reminders to students who are not in compliance with the Board of Regents policy on March 24th.

The Southern Education Foundation (SEF), www.southerneducation.org, is reaching out to tomorrow’s leaders through the 2014 Southern Education Leadership Initiative. Since 2004, SEF has placed over 165 students in 70 nonprofits and foundations throughout the Southern region focused on providing advocacy, grant-making, policy analysis, research, community organizing, and direct service in education. We are seeking outstanding upperclassmen and graduate students to apply for this summer’s 2014 SELI program.
Fellows receive:
- an opportunity to work for eight weeks during the summer in an organization concerned with equity and excellence in education e.g., a policy institution, community-based organization or foundation;
- a living expense stipend of $4,000 (for current upper-level undergraduates or graduating seniors), or $4,500 (for graduate students (incl. law and doctoral students) who will have completed at least one term by June 1, 2014);
- all airfare/car mileage expenses associated with traveling to and from SEF trainings to summer placement site;
- trainings that expose them to research in the field, stress the importance of civic engagement, teach strategies for making change, and provide opportunities to meet and learn from inspiring leaders involved in education policy and practice;
- guidance and supervision from seasoned sector leaders to work through the summer intensively on assigned research, education policy, and nonprofit program related projects; and
- the opportunity to present their work to their peers, reflect, brainstorm how to take the lessons learned from this experience back to their communities, and become part of a network of emerging leaders in the sector.
