The Ivan Allen College Student Advisory Board is reaching out to both students and faculty to attend a field trip to the Atlanta High Museum of Art!

While the plight of the so-called “comfort women” has long been seen as a Korean issue, it is simultaneously a broader matter concerning historical justice, human rights, and peace in East Asia. Three experts share information on how the "comfort women’s" long struggle for justice has been received by the public in Korea, China, and Japan. Participants will theorize possible resolutions that could honor the victims, promote the value of human rights, and facilitate cooperation among the three countries.

We are still accepting applications for our summer 2016 field school, the San Gemini Preservation Studies Program, now in its 18th year, dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage and offering students the opportunity to study and travel in Italy. The Georgia Tech Counseling Center will deliver a presentation about “developing global competence on an international campus” this Wednesday, 9 March, 12-1, in the Smithgall (Flag) Building, Room 117. Intended for students, staff, and faculty, this presentation will review emotional, behavioral, and cognitive skills to help you improve communication and put your cultural knowledge into practice (see flier below for details).

Diversity Week began as Disability and Diversity Awareness Days in 1999 and transformed into Disability and Diversity Awareness Week in 2000. These activities were co-sponsored by the Office of Student Diversity Programs and the Office of Disability Services. These events were designed to promote heightened awareness, acceptance, and understanding of persons with diverse backgrounds and persons with disabilities within the Georgia Tech Community. Diversity Week debuted in 2008 with the theme, “Latitude Adjustment,” and the Office has been using this theme every year. Stephen Covey writes, “We see the world, not as it is, but as we are or, as we are conditioned to see it.” Sometimes we have to move to different place to see the world as it really is. One major goal of the Office of Student Diversity Programs is the prepare students to live, learn and work in a global world. Each year the Office sponsors and co-sponsors several workshops, programs and trainings to prepare our students to be global citizens and global leaders.

Cultural Vistas offers students from around the world the unique opportunity to complete an internship with a startup company in Berlin, the German capital of innovation and entrepreneurship. Participants gain skills custom-tailored to their career goals and previous work experience, as well as an exciting glimpse into Berlin’s thriving startup scene. Cultural Vistas offers paid and unpaid internship placements.

The 2016 Leadership and Multifaith Program (LAMP) symposium will explore issues of food and farming from religious, scientific, historical, and public policy perspectives. LAMP seeks to provide a forum for students, scholars, and community members in Atlanta to consider the current practices and ethical challenges of food production and consumption, from small-scale local agriculture to the global food supply. In keeping with the LAMP vision to promote multifaith understanding in a religiously plural society, speakers will address the unifying concerns for food justice and sustainability and the distinct practices of food preparation and eating that have sustained historical and contemporary religious communities. Through attention to the health of the body, soul, and natural environment, this second annual LAMP symposium aims to work across religious and academic boundaries to promote strong communities, a vibrant nation, and a peaceful and prosperous world.

Panelists include Georgia Tech professors Carl DiSalvo, Jennifer Leavey, Jenny Leigh Smith, and Bill Winders. This event is open to the public.

During First Lady Michelle Obama’s visit to China, she promoted educational exchange programs and emphasized the need for American and Chinese youth to understand each other’s cultures as both countries become further intertwined. About 200,000 Chinese are studying in the United States, more than any other country, compared with only about 20,000 Americans studying in China. The Obama administration is trying to raise that number and the Ameson Education and Cultural Exchange Foundation is taking steps to help.

Any native English speaker holding a bachelor’s degree or higher and possessing a physical copy of his/her diploma and U.S., Canada, or UK citizenship may apply.
