The University of Virginia is proud to sponsor summer archaeological field schools at three of Virginia's premier historic sites: the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown, Thomas Jefferson's primary home and plantation at Monticello, and Jefferson's personal retreat and plantation at Poplar Forest. These field schools offer a unique opportunity for students to make a contribution to the research and interpretation of early American history. Students receive graduate credits (Anthropology 5589) from the University of Virginia.

Each field school provides students a foundation in field of historical archaeology and offers the opportunity to learn the practical skills of site survey, excavation, recording, and laboratory procedures. A good part of each day is spent doing excavation which requires physical endurance and excellent health. On-site instruction, lectures, discussion sessions, and field trips to other archaeological sites complement the field work.

Curated by the Georgia Tech Library in honor of Project One, retroTECH is a crowdsourced exhibit of technological treasures from the personal collections of Georgia Tech faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

The exhibit features a display of treasured technology pieces from the personal collections of Georgia Tech community. Each item is paired with a note from the item's owner. retroTECH is located across from the Library Services Desk on the first floor of the Library. Vote online for your favorite item!

The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum presents, “Bearing Witness: Holocaust Survivors Tell Their Remarkable Stories,” a series of six live and interactive presentations beginning September 7, 2014. Each program is free due to a generous grant from the Sara Giles Moore Foundation.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to witness testimony directly from a Holocaust Survivor and gain a first-hand account of life during the Holocaust. In honor of Bearing Witness, The Breman Museum’s Holocaust Gallery will be open and free to the public from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Docents will be available during the hours of 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to give tours.

All of the speakers are Atlanta residents with very different experiences. As they recall the horrors of the Holocaust their words rise above hatred and retribution to speak about the strength and will that enabled them to survive.

Each event will be held at the museum – 1440 Spring Street NW (18th Street), Atlanta, GA, 30309 at 2:00 pm.

The History Center is presenting to Atlanta and her environs History Matters: Four Days of Fury: Atlanta 1906, which is an immersive and living history program on the 1906 Atlanta Race Riots.

One of Atlanta's Greatest Historical Museums needs our help! Got a couple bucks to spare? Perhaps instead of springing for a latte this week, you could throw some of those George Washingtons toward one of ATL's finest historical landmarks? The Wren's Nest needs a hand. $50,000, to be exact. But you don't have to be Donald Trump to do your part — any donation will help. The West End museum is the historical home of Southern author Joel Chandler Harris, but they're also a staple in the West End community and beyond. With youth mentoring programs like the KIPP Scribes and the Wren's Nest Publishing Company (a literary journal produced by high school students from all over Atlanta), it's pretty easy to see why the Wren's Nest is so much more than a museum — and why they're worth our support.

Donate now to the Wren's Nest, and while you're at it, head down to the West End this weekend to see for yourself exactly how awesome this institution (and their incredible storytellering) really is.

Despite promises from Governor Deal to keep the Georgia Archives open, there is no plan in place for such action. The 7 staff laid off last week received confirmation this week, and planned hours are still restricted to "by appointment only."

The Friends of Georgia Archives and History (www.FOGAH.org) continue to take the lead on educating the public on this issue and gathering support. Two rallies are planned for October, one at the Georgia Capitol and one at the Georgia Archives building.

Position Overview:

The Atlanta History Center seeks a skilled Photoshop user who is customer service-oriented and a team player for the part-time position of Manager of Reprographics Services. Reporting to the Vice President of Research Services, the Manager of Reprographics Services fulfills customer orders for digital and print photography and provides support for Atlanta History Center staff in developing exhibitions and publications.

Essential Job Function: 

• Develop a thorough knowledge of the archival finding aids system for private collections and institutional records of the Kenan Research Center. 
• Communicate with customers to ensure order accuracy and correct specifications. 
• Produce quality scans of collection material for digital delivery or print output for customers in a timely manner.  
• Meet annual sales goals.  
• Produce weekly sales reports and provide updates to customer database.  
• Work with curators on a project basis to provide prints and digital content for exhibitions. 
• Work with Atlanta History Center staff in providing scans for in-house publications.
• Work with outside vendors for out-of-house scanning or other reprographics projects. 
• Maintain inventory of hardware, software, printing supplies and other materials necessary for operations.

Qualifications:  

• Experience using Adobe Photoshop in a Mac and PC environment to create and edit digital content.
•  Availability to work a weekly schedule of 28 hours.
•  Good customer service skills required.
•  Bachelor’s degree required; background in history preferred.

Compensation:

This part-time position pays $15.00 per hour with a maximum of 28 hours per week; it is not eligible for benefits.
