Co-Founder of Yik Yak Visits Campus

Posted by Admin On 2:09:00 PM 0 comments
The cofounder of the app Yik Yak will be visiting campus on Thursday March 5 to give a talk at noon.

Building Online Communities Without Identity:

Creating online communities is hard. Creating online communities where users are anonymous is even harder. This talk will follow the ups and downs of attempting to build thousands of online communities across the country. When we started Yik Yak we had no idea what it meant to build online communities or reputation systems, we had to figure it out along the way. We made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot of lessons, the main one being that community always comes first.

Cofounder and COO of Yik Yak:

Brooks Buffington, originally from Atlanta, Georgia, co-founded Yik Yak in 2013 with his fraternity brother Tyler Droll shortly after graduating from Furman University. Brooks was initially interested in a degree in the arts, but during his sophomore year at Furman switched to accounting to work toward a career in finance. Shortly after graduating though, Brooks decided to put his finance career ambitions on hold to pursue app development full time. Brooks was listed as one of Forbes 30 under 30 for consumer technology in 2014.

Work with the founding Dean, and former assistant director of the National Science Foundation, of the College of Computing on an archival history project about the CoC at Georgia Tech!  Tasks will include such things as updating and formatting an historical timeline with information, putting citations into proper format, and going to the library and archives and digging out/fact checking information.

The project should take 40 - 60 hours over the next few months, with a possibility of an additional 40 - 50 hours after that.  This is a PAID position, $10 per hour, up to a maximum of $1500.

The potential internship candidate should be:

    dependable
    responsive by email/phone
    familiar with appropriate citation styles
well versed in MS Word and Excel
knowledge of website creation a bonus
familiar with (or willing to get familiar with quickly) the GT library and/or GT Archives
    a strong writer

This position starts AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, so please contact Dr. D'Unger ASAP if interested.

Don't end up with some stuffy corporate internship! Startup + Student Connection: Fall 2014 will be on November 3, 2014 from 6:00-8:00PM at the Atlanta Tech Village, 3423 Piedmont Road NE Atlanta, GA 30305. Internships are offered in marketing, software development, sales, administration, social media, and more.
