The Ivan Allen College Student Advisory Board is reaching out to both students and faculty to attend a field trip to the Atlanta High Museum of Art!

The 18-month Digital Art History MA program at Duke University integrates historical disciplines and the study of cultural artifacts with digital visualization techniques for the analysis and presentation of research. The program builds on courses and well-developed strengths at Duke University, and requires 10 courses over three semesters in addition to summer research. Students affiliate with an existing faculty research initiative, from which they will develop their own independent research project for the MA thesis. Common themes that unite the various projects are the visualization of process, the representation of change over time, recontextualizing displaced objects and object biographies.

The MA prepares students for future work in such fields as public history, city planning and architectural design, cultural heritage, museum exhibition design and visualization-based journalism, and provides a springboard for more advanced study in art history, archaeology, architectural history and visual studies. Limited funding may become available in the form of grants and assistantships to students upon positive progress in the program.

The application deadline is March 31st, 2016.

For the Clough Art Crawl, students can submit artwork in six different categories, from canvas to poetry. Cash prizes and a "People's Choice" cash prize will be awarded in each category!

Artists of all levels can submit artwork to be showcased in categories that include: Drawing/Painting, Sculpture/Architecture/Craft Arts, Music/Performing Arts, Photography, Film/Graphic Art/Code Based Art, Poetry/Prose and Spoken (live).

Historic Westside Cultural Arts Council has an exhibit on the history of English Avenue and Vine City November 19, 22 and 25. The exhibit will travel to the English Avenue Food Co-Op, Lindsay Street Baptist Church, and the Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalitions Thanksgiving Meal.

The exhibition, A Gathering of Continents, devoted to Joan Blaeu’s Atlas major at the Robert C. Williams Museum of Paper Making provokes a comparison of historical cartography with the interrogation of space found in recent work by Bruno Latour and William Kentridge. Drawing on cases studies that move from historical cartography to digital media, this presentation challenges cultural practice that still too often separates science and technology from what is commonly regarded as aesthetics. Yves Abrioux is professor of English literature at the University of Paris 8. He has published extensively, in English and in French, on a range of topics and artistic practices (poetry and fiction, visual art, landscape and gardens). His research foregrounds theoretical issues in connection with philosophy and science. He is particularly interested in displacements between media, both traditional and modern, and is currently working on the history and - more specifically - the future of the museum. In 2014, He co-curated Mapping Place: Africa Beyond Paper at the Robert C. CLIO has committed to a 50/50 jury split, evenly divided between men and women, while 70% of our jury is from outside the U.S., ensuring a diverse, global perspective. February 18 - March 7The third annual Tech Arts Festival celebrates the creative spirit with a host of performances, events and exhibitions by Georgia Tech students, faculty, and guest artists. The Tech Arts Festival includes works that showcase the convergence of art and technology, and also works that are solely artistic in nature - music, dance, theatre, digital, literary, and visual arts. 

Madison Cario, director of the Office of the Arts, encourages everyone on campus to check out at least one event. "Find something fun, thought-provoking, or brand new and go! It's easy with so many free events happening both during the day and at night."

Sounds of Atlanta - A multi-sensory exhibit of sound and visual art with GT students and Grammy-nominated recording and mixing engineer KY Engineerin’. Feb. 18. Ferst Center. Free.

Cartoon - A fast and furious fable about violence -- both the cartoon and real-life kind. Presented by DramaTech. Feb. 19-21.

Deliberation - Artist Ruth Stanford has sandblasted the grand jury testimony from the Ferguson/Michael Brown case onto a police car, on view in the Ferst Center Plaza. Panel discussion Feb. 19. Free. Ferst Center.

Join us for the Lillian E. Smith Symposium on Arts & Social Change coming up on March 14 at our Athens, Georgia campus, which will focus on issues and questions that are as relevant today as they were sixty years ago when writer and social activist Lillian Smith was addressing them in the public arena. 

A new salon series showcases Tech's artsy side--check out this project! An HTS student is currently interning at the Millennium Gate Museum and is assisting in this project.

A new lunchtime speaker series, the Arts@Tech Salon Series, featuring a range of arts-related topics started yesterday with a discussion of Winston Churchill’s passion for painting and the role it played in his life.

Duncan Sandys, Churchill’s great-grandson talked about the exhibition of paintings by Churchill at the Millennium Gate Museum at Atlantic Station.

A major goal for the Arts@Tech Salon Series is to grow interest in the arts among Tech students in particular, but also among faculty and staff, according to Travis Denton, curator of the series and McEver Chair in Poetry.

“It’s also important that a higher profile series, such as this, demonstrates to those in the community at large — Atlanta and beyond — that Tech does have an ‘artsy’ side,” Denton said.

Submit your art for the Clough Art Crawl! Students can submit up to 3 pieces in photography, poetry/spoken word/prose, drawing, painting, film, graphic art, code-based art, sculpture, architecture, crafts, music, and performing arts. The submission deadline is January 23, 2015.

The Artifice is an online magazine that covers a wide spectrum of art forms, including Film, Anime, Comics, Literature, Games, and Arts. It is collaboratively built and maintained by the writers. Georgia Tech Night at the Woodruff Arts Center

Students can enjoy Georgia Tech performances, tickets to the High Museum of Art and the Alliance Theatre, snacks and refreshments — all free of charge! Come out and enjoy all the the Woodruff Arts Center has to offer. Stinger buses will provide free pick-up and drop-off at the Student Center before and after the event.

Buses will run circuits from the south side of the Student Center to the Woodruff Arts Center from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Catered reception will take place from 6–8 p.m.

The High Museum is currently showing American Encounters: Anglo-American Portraiture in an Era of Revolution. The Alliance is showing Bull Durham, and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tanne Foundation Announces 2014 Awards

The Tanne Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2014 awards. Now in its sixteenth year, the foundation's mission is to underscore the importance of supporting individual artists with unrestricted funding. The awards, totaling $42,000, honor seven artists in recognition of their artistic achievements as well as one artist-run organization which has presented exceptional work for over 37 years. One of the recipients is Brian Ginn, an HTS undergraduate alum:


Brian Ginn, Decatur, GA, is an interdisciplinary artist. Ginn's work involves both the creation of video art and the live manipulation of video in performance. He creates video with photographic techniques, computer creation and alteration. He collaborates with other artists or musicians in a live setting to create live art. Ginn's theater work has been performed internationally with 7 Stages, Theater Emory, and Actor's Express in Atlanta, Georgia, and Dah Teatar in Belgrade, Serbia. His collaborative work with Dah Teatar brought him to Belgrade in 2001 where he met his future wife Bojana. He shares this award with her.

Under the direction of the Marketing and Communications Manager, the intern will focus on a variety of projects to learn various aspects of non-profit arts administration both in general and specific to the interest of marketing as a focus area.

General responsibilities may include:

· Assisting with the creation of hard and soft copy files

· Assisting in the writing and editing of informational materials and reports

· Assisting with mailings – mail merges, printing and stuffing

Specific responsibilities:

· Research competition and collect sample collateral

· Shadow Marketing and Communications Manager

· Attend planning meetings for marketing and development

· Audit websites and on-campus marketing

· Assist with social media postings

· Assist with function book maintenance

· Assist with compilation of fact sheets, and marketing collateral design

Intern will gain experience and/or improve upon:
Research skills
Marketing program support
Website and social media support
Marketing plan coordination
Special projects

Qualifications:
Enrolled in an accredited college or university program
Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Completed coursework in marketing, fine arts, research
Basic computer processing skills including Microsoft Office Suite
Experience in internet research
Interest in the Arts and Non Profit Sector

· Previous internship experience is preferred

· Preference will be given to college juniors and seniors and those seeking academic credit

Compensation:
Internship is unpaid, but offers a great deal of hands on experience. College credit is available through HTS.
