Summer Teach-In

The International Human Trafficking Institute (IHTI) invites students and youth activists to Atlanta, the think tank of the American Civil Rights Movement, for a Summer Teach-In, on how to plan, strategize, and ignite an activist movement on campus.

IHTI will host a two-day session (July 22-23) at The Center for Civil and Human Rights designed for students who wish to organize their peers for social change engagement. While the focus is student engagement to end human trafficking, these strategies and principles may be applied toward addressing any social injustice.

Solidarity Ignite Dominican Republic Trips

Solidarity Ignite is a nonprofit which brings students from across the country together to focus on social justice issues on their campuses and get trained in concrete organizing skills to advance these efforts.

They are leading Summer trainings/study abroad trips to the Dominican Republic, where students can meet with garment workers who sew Georgia Tech clothes and learn how universities are connected to global social justice movements. This year's Summer Immersion is August 3rd-17th. More information can be found on this page.

Idea 2 Serve Competition

Students are encouraged to participate in the annual Ideas to Serve Competition. If you are a student working on projects (class related or personal) that address social or environmental problems in the community or around the globe this is a great opportunity to get mentoring, feedback, and prize money to move your idea to the next phase. It is also a great differentiator for your resume and a great way to expand your networks.

The Bootcamp is coming up this Friday and the deadline for submissions is March 18.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Finals Poster Showcase and vote for their favorite team on April 8, 6:00pm in Scheller.

TODAY: Social Justice Training for Students

This highly interactive and engaging training will expand students’ skills regarding the concept and ideal of social justice – including terminology, definitions, and action planning. Diversity & Inclusivity Week 2016: A Latitude Adjustment

Diversity Week began as Disability and Diversity Awareness Days in 1999 and transformed into Disability and Diversity Awareness Week in 2000. These activities were co-sponsored by the Office of Student Diversity Programs and the Office of Disability Services. These events were designed to promote heightened awareness, acceptance, and understanding of persons with diverse backgrounds and persons with disabilities within the Georgia Tech Community. Diversity Week debuted in 2008 with the theme, “Latitude Adjustment,” and the Office has been using this theme every year. Stephen Covey writes, “We see the world, not as it is, but as we are or, as we are conditioned to see it.” Sometimes we have to move to different place to see the world as it really is. One major goal of the Office of Student Diversity Programs is the prepare students to live, learn and work in a global world. Each year the Office sponsors and co-sponsors several workshops, programs and trainings to prepare our students to be global citizens and global leaders.

Accenture is thrilled to announce the start of the 2016 U.S. Undergraduate Innovation Challenge – an event combining hands-on consulting experience with the opportunity to make a positive impact in the community and land an Accenture internship.

About the Competition

The Accenture Innovation Challenge is a multi-round event that combines hands-on consulting experience with the opportunity to make a positive impact on society. Students will work as teams to collaboratively develop a solution for a case based on a real-world challenge faced by our non-profit partner, World Wildlife Fund (WWF®). Students will apply individually and Accenture will make the final team assignments. We will ensure that all teams are comprised of students from a wide variety of skills and backgrounds.

If selected to participate in this multi-round event, students will be partnered with Accenture coaches and use their analytical, strategic thinking, and creative problem solving skills to innovate – and possibly help implement – solutions to real-world challenges that are faced by our non-profit partner, World Wildlife Fund (WWF®). Details about challenge dates, prizes and eligibility are available on our website.

Only students from select schools and programs are eligible to compete, and Accenture is pleased to extend this opportunity to GA Tech students. The Art of Civil Disobedience

Intern with Rise Up and Care

Rise Up & Care (www.riseup.care), an innovative social entrepreneurship NGO run by Dr. Kirk Bowman (GT International Affairs) is currently seeking part-time interns (10 hours per week) for pay or credit. Rise Up & Care is currently producing 6 films based in Rio de Janeiro and will be showing them at a film festival on 17 screens in Rio de Janeiro during the 2016 Summer Olympics. Rise Up & Care is also expanding its model to new cities. Interns can do scholarly research, writing, media promotion, social media, social entrepreneurship strategy, and more. The Diversity Ambassador program is recruiting students! They are looking for students who are interested in learning more about the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and would like a space to work towards becoming more multicultural competent.

Participating in the program requires a commitment from students to attend weekly meetings, attend trainings, workshops, and campus events to increase students’ knowledge and awareness regarding diversity on Georgia’s Tech campus and worldwide.

Work with "Excel at Georgia Tech"

Excel at Georgia Tech (formerly known as the IPA) allows students with mild intellectual and developmental disabilities to complete a four-year Georgia Tech certificate program while experiencing life as an undergraduate. Excel is housed in the Scheller College of Business Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship (ILE).

Excel currently has immediate hiring needs in the follow two areas.
1. In-Class Support (Paid position): 5 hours/week

An in-class support is a paid GT student who helps an Excel student acclimate to a traditional Georgia Tech class, reviews key material after the class, and assists students in staying on top of assignments. The in-class support may take notes during class or help facilitate interactions in group projects. He/she will stay in close contact with the Excel Lecturer. Below are two classes that are available for an in-class support role.

- Spanish 3823: Spanish Socio-Pragmatics (MWF 1-2 p.m.)

- LMC 2500: Introduction to Film (MW 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.)

2. Excel Book Club: 3-5 hours/week

The inaugural Book Club will be studying the Book of Virtues by William J. Bennet. Book Club will meet TR from 1:30 – 3:00 in the BME building. It will be facilitated by the Excel lecturer, but the goal is to create collaborative conversations. It should be an incredible opportunity to learn about virtues with a very diverse group of learners.

2016 MLK Lecture & Campus Events

The annual lecture in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held on Wednesday, January 13th at 3.00 PM in the Student Center Ballroom. The speaker is Jeff Johnson, who will ask the audience to take a bit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and speak the truth, enter nontraditional partnerships, maybe become a little uncomfortable. “Ask yourself, ‘What will I leave on this earth?’” A D.C.-based, award-winning journalist, social activist, and political commentator, Johnson has spent the last decade merging the worlds of politics and popular culture.

Celebration events will continue in the Student Center Ballroom the following evening (January 14th) at 7.00 PM. Featured will be student speeches, cultural performance, a candle lighting ceremony, and a reception.

"Semester in the City" Class Open to HTS Majors

Interested in urban areas? Take HTS 2803 HPC, “Semester in the City: Engaging Westside Communities” and explore how an urban neighborhood works – and equally important, to work in and with that neighborhood.

The course is taught by visiting assistant professor of history Dr. Todd Michney and will focus on nearby Westside communities facing serious sustainability challenges, but which are also developing significant strategies for positive change. Looking at English Avenue, Vine City, and nearby areas from a variety of perspectives – historical, social, political, economic, and environmental, among others.

Class registration is January 7 - 15.
