President G. P. "Bud" Peterson is hopeful that services such as this payment installment plan will be a useful tool to ensure that limited resources do not prevent qualified and capable students from earning a Georgia Tech degree, especially in today's economy.

Enrolling in the payment plan allows students to defer up to 50 percent of their current term tuition and mandatory fee balance remaining after the application of any expected financial aid.   Of the remaining balance, half is due approximately 30 days after classes begin, and the remaining amount is due approximately 60 days into the term. All elective charges — housing, parking and meal plans — must be paid by the standard fee payment deadline.

While the plan is intended to be a convenience, it is not a free service. Students who elect to participate must pay an enrollment fee of $75, which will help offset administrative costs. Those who do not meet the scheduled payments risk penalty fees and/or academic withdrawal from the Institute.  The plan will be available for spring term. The final fee payment deadline to avoid class cancellation and sign up for the payment plan is Jan. 14.

At the April Board meeting, the USG Board of Regents announced a decision to allow Georgia Tech to offer students an optional payment plan for tuition and mandatory fees beginning with the Fall 2012 semester. The payment plan allows a student to defer payment for fifty percent (50%) of the current term’s tuition and mandatory fee balance. The deferrable balance is calculated after all actual and expected financial aid is applied to the student’s account. Under the payment plan terms, half the deferred balance is due September 17, 2012, and the remaining amount is due October 15, 2012. Deferred payments must be made through an automatic deduction from the student or parent’s bank account. All elective charges such as housing, parking, and meal plan, as well as the other fifty percent (50%) of tuition and fees must be paid by the final payment deadline for the term. Additionally, when the payment plan option is elected, a $75 enrollment fee is assessed per term to offset administrative costs. Students must make both scheduled deferred payments via automatic deduction from their bank accounts, as agreed upon, to avoid withdrawal from the Institute. Fall 2012 Financial Aid Applications Due Soon: 

May 1 is the deadline for 2012-2013 financial aid applications to be received in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for continuing students. A complete application consists of the following: 

1. A 2012-2013 Georgia Tech Application for Scholarships and Financial Aid (GT APP), available at www.finaid.gatech.edu/forms 
2. For eligible Georgia resident undergraduates, a HOPE application, available at www.GAcollege411.org (if not completed in a prior year) 
3. A valid 2012-2013 FAFSA (for students applying for all aid), available at www.fafsa.ed.gov We encourage use of a new tool called “IRS Data Retrieval,” which allows you to download tax information directly to the FAFSA from the IRS. Tax data will be available through the IRS Data Retrieval option within one to two weeks after electronic submission of taxes to the IRS. Using this option will reduce the amount of documentation that the financial aid office needs to request for students selected for “verification,” making the process faster and simpler.

A Letter from President Peterson

To the students of Georgia Tech:

During the past month, I have met several times with representatives from the undergraduate and graduate student populations. They have shared their concerns regarding the increased tuition and special fees approved by the Board of Regents at its meeting April 19th. I have assured them that I share their concerns and we are working to address the challenges that are driving the escalating cost of getting a degree not only at Georgia Tech, but also throughout the state.

What I heard from undergraduates is that there is considerable confusion regarding the recent legislative changes made to the HOPE scholarship — what it does or does not cover now. Though official regulations that govern the law are still pending from the Georgia Student Finance Commission, we have created a site to help provide some clarity as we know it on these and other questions at www.gatech.edu/budgetupdate.

A HOPE Information Sessions will be held at 11AM on Thursday, October 28 in the Clary Theater of the Bill Moore Student Success Center.  

There will be lots of good information for students on keeping, and regaining the HOPE scholarship, and time for students to ask questions. Also, a brand new system upgrade will allow students to see their HOPE GPA on their unofficial transcript, and we'll be showing students how to access this information.
