The Ivan Allen College Distinguished Alumni Awards only a week away!

RSVP by April 6 for the event which will be held Wednesday evening, April 13. In addition to honoring alumni from each of our six schools, and our Ivan Allen Jr. Legacy Award recipients, the College will present a special award to legendary football coach Homer Rice.

The Ivan Allen College Student Advisory Board is reaching out to both students and faculty to attend a field trip to the Atlanta High Museum of Art!

Ivan Allen Shadow Day is quickly approaching (Friday, April 1st) and student volunteers are still needed for the event! Volunteers only need an hour or more of free time on Friday and will be asked to give tours, mingle with students, or bring students to class. Shadow Day is such a rewarding experience and a great way to show prospective students around campus.

The Ivan Allen College is currently gathering student employment data through our Professional Experiences Survey. Student participation in this survey is essential for development of appropriate employer relationships and marketing to prospective students.

The Ivan Allen College Student Advisory Board would like to invite you to explore some of Atlanta's top social and cultural attractions with fellow Liberal Arts students and faculty! Depending on general interest, we'll offer an outing in March before Spring Break, and one in early April before finals roll in.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the Georgia Institute of Technology a $1 million grant for a new learning center that will serve as an innovation engine driving digital humanities education and scholarship.

Inside Higher Ed featured a story on Willie Pearson, Jr., who co-edited Changing the Face of Engineering: The African American Experience along with HSTS alum Yu Tao, now assistant professor of sociology and director of gender and cultural studies at Stevens Institute of Technology, and John Slaughter, professor of education and engineering at the University of Southern California and a former director of the National Science Foundation.

The book is a comprehensive history of African-Americans working in the field of engineering and an argument that their continued underrepresentation puts the country at a severe disadvantage. It comprises 15 chapters by a variety of scholars writing from their own unique perspectives.

Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage Symposium: Civil Rights, Ethics, and Leadership
When: Thursday, February 18, 2016

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join campus and local leadership for a symposium and luncheon honoring Allen Prize awardee Nancy Parrish, Founder and CEO of Protect Our Defenders. Attendees will actively engage in dialogue relating to human rights, leadership, and social change issues.

This course will prepare students for leadership in a multifaith society through the study of world religions and active engagement with the diverse religious communities of Atlanta. It emphasizes service learning through site visits and field research in collaboration with faith-based community partners. Through this course, students will come to understand the core beliefs and practices of the world’s major religions, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Students will also encounter the unique manifestations of these faith traditions in America and the particular needs and aspirations of Atlanta’s religious communities. This course is part of the Leadership and Multifaith Program (LAMP), a collaborative endeavor between Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College and Candler School of Theology at Emory University (http://lamp.iac.gatech.edu). It is an introductory course intended for students majoring in any field. There are no prerequisites.
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS:

• Field trips to five religious sites: The Temple-Hebrew Benevolent Congregation, Ebenezer Baptist Church, al-Farooq Mosque, SGI Buddhist Center, and BAPS Hindu Temple

• Guest lectures: Community leaders will speak on topics including sacred architecture, “Religion in the Civil Rights movement,” and “1000 Inventions of the Muslim World.”

• Service learning web design: In teams, students will create a website documenting the sacred spaces of Atlanta, filling a gap in the available information on religious diversity in Atlanta.

Join with other Yellow Jacket families from around the world as we host Georgia Tech’s Family Weekend on Friday, October 2- Sunday, October 4, 2015. 

On September 9th from 2pm to 3pm we will hold our third Ivan Allen College Twitter chat between students and alumni. The Chat will coincide with the Georgia Tech Career Fair; thus the topic is "How to Network at a Career Fair."

As a reminder, our Twitter chats began in the spring through the Alumni Relations subcommittee of the CLASS taskforce between C2D2 and Ivan Allen. Stephanie Jackson, Amy D'Unger, Meredith Schnepp, Jade Hill, and I have continued development on this project. Each Twitter chat brings together no more than four alums at a time to answer both moderated and student questions for one hour through social media.

We hope you will consider tuning in to the Twitter Chat. Moderated questions will be tweeted by Stephanie Jackson through the @GTliberalarts twitter account, and all tweets will use the hashtag #IACcareerchat.
