On Friday, February 6th, the Ivan Allen College is hosting Shadow Day for prospective and admitted students. This event is one of the college's most important recruitment tools, and your student ambassadors need your help in showing prospective students what we are all about! We need volunteers to take students to IAC classes, bring them on small, personal campus tours, and persuade them to choose GT Liberal Arts.

Ivan Allen Shadow Day is fast approaching and we are looking for student volunteers to interact with prospective students. Volunteers will be bringing students to class, giving small tours, or interacting with students at breakfast/lunch. If you could pass along the following information to all faculty to speak about in class, that would be greatly appreciated. Shadow Day is an important day to show off our programs to prospective students and we need as many volunteers as possible to make it happen.

The College's annual Shadow Day events have been scheduled for February 6th and April 3rd. On these two days, prospective high school juniors and admitted high school seniors will come to campus to spend an entire day immersed in Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech.We hope that you will take this opportunity to interact with future students at our breakfast and lunch receptions on these days.

Each semester, Georgia Tech's FirstGen student organization (www.firstgen.gtorg.gatech.edu) hosts Shadow Day. For this event, FirstGen invites at-risk high-school students to campus and provides them a glimpse into the typical day of a college student by pairing them up with Georgia Tech students to "shadow" for the day. Tech volunteers act as mentors whom the high school students can call upon to answer questions about applying to college or attending college. Continued contact with each other, beyond Shadow Day is encouraged, but by no means required. The goal is to provide these students with the encouragement and support they need to see beyond graduation, and hopefully on to college.

This year’s event is on Friday, April 11th and FirstGen will be hosting 60 students for Shadow Day. Please volunteer!

We are looking for STUDENT volunteers to:
participate on a student panel (to answer general questions from the participants, 11am-noon)
be a Shadow Day ambassador and "be shadowed" by a student from 1-3pm; an agenda of items to cover will be provided. Consists of showing the student around campus, taking them to a class (don't worry if you don't have a class), talking to them about your daily experience as a college student and answering any questions they might have regarding the college application process

FACULTY and STAFF volunteers:
to mingle with the students during lunch (lunch will be provided, noon-1pm)

Are you a senior high school student who has applied to Georgia Tech, or a high-performing junior who is contemplating applying to Tech next year?  Come learn all about the School of History, Technology, and Society at one of the two SHADOW DAYS being held this year.  Shadow Day is a visitation program just for students interested in the liberal arts.  You can find out all about the liberal arts college, as well as learn about opportunities in history and sociology.  For more info on dates and to register, visit www.shadowday.iac.gatech.edu. 

Now that the term is about to start, the Shadow a Teacher program is up and running for its first full school year.

Established in March of 2013, the Pre-Teaching has joined with neighboring school systems to create a shadow program for Tech students considering pursuing a career as a K-12 teacher. The program gives participants the chance to spend one day with a teacher who teaches a subject of interest.  Participating students will spend one day at a high school, middle school or elementary school. Participants could possibly spend one day at each school but would not return to the same school. Students will be able to request a day to visit with two-three weeks advance notice. The Pre-Teaching advisor will be involved throughout the entire process and will coordinate the student and the school before and after the visitation. Participants can be undergraduate or graduate students.

Additionally, the program will serve as a small recruitment tool for the participating systems. Georgia Tech students graduate with highly respected degrees, and many would like to teach in the Metro Atlanta area. An experience at a school would give the student the opportunity to meet first hand with teachers and possibly administrators and help participants make important career choices regarding where to apply for teaching jobs.

Although we are having a meeting shortly today, you can drop in and join us or contact me afterward for training/volunteer materials. (There will be an information and training session Tuesday March 29th at 5pm in the Student Center room 301. Please look out for another email regarding this meeting. This session will be helpful if you have never volunteered for the college and want to be as prepared as possible to answer questions or be keen on best tour routes during Tech’s latest construction projects. FREE PIZZA WILL BE PROVIDED!)

The Study Abroad Panel  will be comprised of a few students with Study Abroad Experience who will aid a Georgia Tech Advisor in a discussion on Study Abroad  opportunities at Tech. The Student Life Panel will hold three students who are very involved with both the IAC and Georgia Tech. The students will explain the unique aspect of balancing fun on campus with campus organizations, as well as diving into the unique opportunity of living in one of the largest cities of the United States.
