As a part of the JCI Foundation’s mission to help young women achieve greatness in their lives through positive mentorship, education, and sport, The Judson Women’s Leadership Conference was created. It aims to help young women, entering or already in the workforce, achieve greatness in their lives by providing insight and tools which will help them become leaders in their respective fields.

Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to submit papers on any topic in the field of history. Presentations should be about twenty minutes in length (ten written double-spaced pages).
Non-members of Phi Alpha Theta may present papers but will not be eligible for prizes or awards.

Interested in research? Have a project you'd like to share? Apply to represent History and Sociology at the 11th Annual ACC Meeting of the Minds, being held this year at Syracuse University from April 8 - 10.
This conference is an opportunity for undergraduate students to present their research in a professional setting and share their work with peers. Each member institution of the ACC is asked to send 6-8 students to the conference.
Students interested in attending the conference and presenting their research should submit the online form found here by January 29th. Students do not need to register on the conference website, only on the UROP form. All expenses related to attending the conference will be covered. History and Sociology students have been selected several times for this honor!

Past meetings have included papers on topics ranging from agriculture to aerospace technology, health policy to computer gaming, and spanned the 16th through 20th centuries. As always, we are especially interested in developing professional (roundtable) discussions devoted to the challenges and opportunities of teaching and doing the history of science and technology in southern contexts.
Graduate students whose papers are accepted for presentation and who promptly confirm participation can receivetwo nights of free lodging (in the home of a AU faculty member or AU graduate student). For faculty participants, lodging in local hotels will be available. Program decisions will be made and emailed to participants by February 28th, 2016.
The Culverhouse College of Commerce at The University of Alabama is hosting its second annual Leadership Diversity Competition on January 28-30, 2016. The deadline to apply is December 11.
This is an outstanding opportunity for junior and seniors from all majors to form a team of four and experience graduate school. A majority of the team must be from under-represented populations in business, but we want to attract all majors not just business majors.

The top three teams receive cash awards.

The 34th Southeastern Undergraduate Sociology Symposium on "Interconnections, Institutions, and Inequality" on February 19-20 officially calls for papers. SEUSS will be held at Emory University. Students who papers are accepted will give a 12-15 minute presentation of their research. The submission deadline is January 22, 2016, interested students should email Dr. Karen Hegtvedt (khegtve@emory.edu) the following items with the term "SEUSS" as the subject line. Include a 150-word abstract or completed paper with an abstract and a faculty letter of support.

This conference revolves around the Korean War, with special emphasis on the U.S. and China. The conference is free and open to the public. It's a come-and-stay or come-and-go symposium, with a lunch provided. It will be held in the the Wardlaw room (where the IAC now holds its faculty meetings). RSVP if you want to ensure that you have a seat at a table -- and get a free buffet lunch. Undergrad students are invited and encouraged to come and go, as needed.
Bill Winders gave a presentation titled "The Geopolitics of Grains: Neoliberalism and Economic Conflict in Agriculture, 1975 to 2010" in the session "New Directions in the Study of Agriculture and Food Systems." The papers in the session examined new questions about changes in farming and the food system that span the political economy to local food systems.
Winders’ research showed that — over the past 40 years — the world economy has experienced significant liberalization in many economic sectors, including agriculture. For agriculture, liberalization has meant changes in national and international regulations and coordination of prices, production, and trade.
In light of these changes, Winders’ paper examined how key conflicts that have long existed among producers of different kinds of grains — corn, rice, and wheat — have contributed to liberalization, and how liberalization has, in turn, exacerbated competition between grain producers. His research utilized key cases such as NAFTA, the wheat trade war between the United States and Europe, the battle to put agriculture in GATT, the battle of export subsidies, and the expansion of global meat consumption.
Willie Pearson, Jr. participated in an invitation-only reception on data and policy analysis, hosted by ASA Executive Director Sally Hillsman. Among the invitees were ASA Executive Office senior staff; Deputy of the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences division at NSF; the Senior Program Officer for Sociology at NSF; members of the ASA Council; and data analysts.

Brian Jirout, who currently holds a doctoral dissertation fellowship from the National Air and Space Museum, presented a paper entitled “Civil Remote Sensing for Sale: Commercializing Landsat Image Use, 1978-1989.” The paper was part of a panel entitled “’Up in the Air’: Aerospace as Arenas for Public/Private Cooperation and Contention.”
Emily Gibson, a doctoral candidate and holder of a Dean’s Fellowship, also presented at the session. Her paper, “Air France — ‘The World’s Largest Airline’: A Commercial Firm as the Chosen Instrument of France’s Colonial Mission, 1948-1950s,” utilized archival materials she obtained while serving as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech’s campus in Lorraine, France.
Gibson also participated in a special Presidential Roundtable entitled “The Future of SHOT: A Graduate-Led Forum.” The session was organized in part by John Krige, Georgia Tech’s Kranzberg Professor of the History of Technology, and second-year HSTS doctoral student Alice Clifton, who presided at the event.

The PoweR Program is a two weekend intensive program that provides current communication students at Clark Atlanta University with an opportunity to understand the dynamics of a real PR campaign. By combining real-world work experience, training and development, and networking opportunities within the industry, PoweR participants gain valuable skills to better position themselves in the marketplace. Simultaneously, the program offers companies the opportunity to access top talent.
As a participant in the program, students will have a chance to work with coaches. The coaches – which include CAU alum - are current communications professionals that work in various industries and have respected knowledge and experience within their field. Their involvement will promote and advocate the importance of having alum help structure the PR curriculum as well as provide a current perspective of PR best practices that are not included in the textbooks.
ELIGIBILITY
To Apply for PoweR, you must be:
- Currently a college sophomore, junior or senior.
- Maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.8 out of 4.0; College sophomores, juniors or seniors must meet the GPA requirement at the time the application is submitted.
- Proof of GPA must be submitted via an official college transcript upon request.
- Able to show your passion to kick start a career in public relations through your essays.
Applications are due October 23rd.
This year’s event, focused on the call to action to “Be Bold,” will give attendees the chance to network, hear from guest speakers, and honor leaders in the community. The day will include breakfast, keynote sessions, workshops, lunch, a networking fair, live entertainment, and an awards ceremony. This year’s keynote speakers are Parisa Khosravi, an award-winning former CNN journalist, and Deb Sudbury, who leads the Labor & Employment Practice at Jones Day’s Atlanta office.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is October 16.
