The Atlanta History Center is hiring interns!


An internship at the Atlanta History Center is a challenging, educational experience designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in any aspect of museum administration, archives and/or public history. Working alongside AHC staff in a tutorial arrangement, interns gain valuable skills and training in their chosen field. While specific projects vary with AHC needs and priorities, opportunities will be available in a variety of areas. Placements are subject to availability. Internships at the Atlanta History Center carry no stipends or wages. To apply, please complete the application form and include the required documents. Tourism Internship (Fall, Spring, Summer) with the Atlanta History Center. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2013.

Description: An intern is needed to assist the Group Tour Coordinator and Director of Tourism and Community Partnerships with general research and publicity for group offerings at the Atlanta History Center and Margaret Mitchell House. The intern will have the opportunity to assist with marketing campaigns for group tours as well as general tourism initiatives.

Duties: Intern will learn how to build and maintain contact databases, discover and reach out to target markets, uncover and assist in fulfilling group marketing opportunities, attend tourism industry and related meetings, learn and execute customer relations strategies, and work with other departments in order to promote product. Wrap-up reports of all projects completed will be required.

Desired Qualifications: Marketing, communications, tourism, or public relations course of study and/or experience desired. Intern should be detail-oriented. Strong writing and communication skills, knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel are necessary.

Time Commitment: 10-week commitment. Flexible work schedule. May have to work some weekends.

Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos

Enjoy a day of cultural exploration during the Atlanta History Center’s annual family program, Day of the Dead or Dia de Muertos. Visitors of all ages enjoy learning about this ancient festival rooted in Mexican heritage and that serves as a way for families to remember their deceased loved ones while celebrating their children and the continuity of life. Smiling faces, swirling brilliant colors, storytelling, elaborately decorated altars designed to honor lost family and friends, authentic Mexican food, music, and variety of performances are highlights of this celebration.

The Atlanta History Center offers lectures on a wide variety of topics, from presidential history and gardens to social history and non-fiction adventures. Past lecturers have included such world-renowned authors as Walter Isaacson, Richard Russo, and Alice Hoffman. The Atlanta History Center’s summer/fall lecture line-up continues to offer audiences a wide variety of subject matter with current and award-winning authors.
Each lecture program is designed to join authors and audiences in an intimate setting complete with author presentation, audience discussions, and book signings. Admission to attend a lecture program is $5 for Atlanta History Center members and $10 for nonmembers and free for AHC Insiders, unless otherwise noted. Lectures are held at either the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead or at the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown. The Atlanta History Center has announced the schedule for their upcoming and ongoing lecture series.  The series will feature many prominent and critically-acclaimed authors from a range of genres, including Pulitzer prize-winners Joseph Ellis and A. Scott Berg, New York Times bestselling author H.W. Brands, and American Book Award winner Edwidge Dandicat.
The Atlanta History Center is extremely honored to host these individuals at our main campus in Buckhead, as well as the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown. 

The Atlanta History Center will be commemorating the Civil War sesquicentennial with the "Citizens and Soldiers: The American Civil War" program on Saturday March 16, 2013 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. All guests receive free admission!

The History Center is presenting to Atlanta and her environs History Matters: Four Days of Fury: Atlanta 1906, which is an immersive and living history program on the 1906 Atlanta Race Riots.

The Atlanta History Center has two (2) Archivist positions open and is accepting applications. If interested, please review the following job description which is applicable to both positions.

Reporting to the Vice President, Research Services, the Archivist is an entrepreneurial, collaborative, team oriented individual that is resourceful and prepared to lead. This individual supports and works in conjunction with the Senior Archivist to acquire, preserve, and make available collections for and of the Kenan Research Center at the Atlanta History Center. In addition, s/he is responsible for managing volunteers and compiling statistics for the reading room.

The successful candidate will be a strategic and innovative thinker, as well as a self-starter who demonstrates strong interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills and energy, creative vision, and a sense of humor and charisma; has strong organizational and analytical ability, in addition to a positive attitude and human relations orientation; is an articulate and persuasive communicator, both verbally and in writing; is goal-oriented and able to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet myriad deadlines; and possesses a strong sense of personal and professional integrity with the ability to exercise authority and accept responsibility.

A new internship position is available at the Atlanta History Center in the Public Programs department. They are looking for one or two students to assist with the annual Poetry Out Loud program that the History Center facilitates. Participating high school students from across the state of Georgia compete in poetry recitation competitions during the month of February. They are seeking an intern to work primarily on this project but to also assist within the department with the daily operations. Applications will be accepted through December 7th.

In 1957, Congress established the United States Civil War Centennial Commission, charged with overseeing the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Civil War.  Organizers hoped that formal commemoration activities would bolster patriotism at the height of the Cold War as well as increase tourism in the South.  But the patriotic pageant that organizers envisioned turned into a struggle over the memory of the Civil War and the problems of racial segregation.  In Troubled Commemoration: The American Civil War Centennial, 1961-1965, Robert J. Cook explores the Centennial as a window into the political, social, and cultural conflicts of America in the 1960s and the development of the modern South.

The Atlanta History Center is accepting applications from qualified candidates for their summer internship program.  They accept students from a broad range of career fields including Communications, History, Business and Education.  In addition to recruiting for the summer term, they are currently in need of interns in our Public Relations department to start immediately.

The Atlanta History Center is looking at new ways to engage our visitors through a variety of fresh formats. The History Center has the power to raise curiosity, prolong engagement and develop deeper levels of inquiry, if we are able to tap into how our guests view their experience. In order for us to achieve this goal, we need your help!

We are currently recruiting volunteers who are interested in helping us conduct on-site visitor surveys to determine what our guests like/dislike about their museum experience. These surveys will help us plan for future tours, exhibitions and programs. Selected volunteers will go through a training program to learn how to interact with visitors in order to record this valuable information about their experience at the museum.

Teams of volunteers will engage visitors through the process of intercept interviews. Through the survey training, volunteers will learn about proper procedures for intercepting visitors, how to respond to visitors who say yes or no, how to conduct an interview, and how to use the equipment that responses need to be recorded on (we’ll likely be using handhelds of some sort). Then, using some stock questions we’ll have ready and programmed, the volunteers will go out onto the museum floor or grounds and conduct some sample interviews.

Volunteers who participate must enjoy talking and interacting with people (including children) and will be called upon to conduct the surveys during the week and on weekends, so a flexible schedule is ideal for those interested in this opportunity. The first training session will take place on Tuesday, September 20th, with another training to be held on a following weekend day. The first surveys will be conducted in the early fall. Join us on Saturday, February 27th at 1:00 PM at the Atlanta History Center to view the exhibit "Let Your Motto Be Resistance: Exploring 150 Years of African American History Through Photography" in celebration of African American History Month. 

The School of HTS will pay for HTS students and their guests.  We will meet at the Atlanta History Center at 1:00 PM.  Students needing a ride from campus should meet in front of the Old CE Building at 12:30 PM, and email Dr. D to let her know that you need a ride.

No oppressed people have ever secured their liberty without resistance.”
– Abolitionist Henry Highland Garnet, 1843

Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, almost all black Americans embraced Garnet’s plea to “let your motto be resistance,” based on “the circumstances that surround you.”

The words of this nineteenth century political activist and Underground Railroad conductor are the essence of the exhibition, Let Your Motto Be Resistance: African American Portraits. Let Your Motto Be Resistance is the first of four exhibitions being presented as part of the Atlanta History Center’s Civil War to Civil Rights exhibition series.

Let Your Motto Be Resistance: African American Portraits features 69 stunning photographic portraits that trace 150 years of U.S. history through the lives of well-known African Americans, including abolitionists, artists, scientists, authors, statesmen, entertainers, and sports figures. These revealing photographs illuminate the creative and courageous ways that African Americans redefined the history of the United States through struggle, accommodation, and resistance.

Let Your Motto Be Resistance was organized by the National Museum of African American History and Culture in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery and the International Center of Photography in New York and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

College Sophomores and Juniors:
Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program Open for Applications

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History invites college sophomores and juniors with a passion for American history, and academic excellence in the field, to apply for the Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program in New York City, which includes:

-10 Gilder Lehrman History Scholarships to a five-week research program from June 27 to July 31, 2010.
-Up to 30 awards for One-Week Scholars to attend our program from June 12 to June 19, 2010.

History Scholars conduct primary-source research, meet with eminent scholars in American history, and explore archives and museums. One-Week Scholars have access to leading historians and in-depth tours of select New York City archives and museums. All applicants will automatically be considered for both programs.
