Fall 2015 graduates, along with their parents and friends, are invited to share in the excitement of Commencement at Georgia Tech’s President's Graduation Celebration. Held on Friday, December 11, from 3-5 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom, families and graduates have an opportunity to take photos with beloved Tech mascots, meet administrators, faculty, and staff, and share in unique traditions that make Georgia Tech such a cherished institution.

In a matter of roughly ten weeks, the HSOC team pulled together an extensive series of panels that fill the walls of a large reception space at the course’s clubhouse. One highlight for me was a map showing locales where forty-some subsequent civil rights cases were won based on citations to Holmes v. Atlanta.
The opening reception, held in the middle of a very rainy day, attracted an overflow crowd of over a hundred visitors, including many members of the Holmes family. Ninety-seven-year-old Charlie Bell, who played alongside “Tup” Holmes in the first Black foursome to play at Bobby Jones, on Christmas Eve of 1955, flew in from New Orleans for the occasion. He and the Holmes family were deeply moved and deeply appreciative of what Mary, Jennifer, and team had done. So were the members of the Friends of Bobby Jones Golf Course, a neighborhood association devoted to preserving the Buckhead facility. I spent more than an hour fielding compliments on behalf of Jennifer and Mary, who had to miss the event while attending an academic conference.
Congrats to everyone involved in staging the exhibit, which will remain on permanent display at the club.
The article is entitled, “With a Song in Their Hands: Incendiary Décimas from the Texas and Louisiana Borderlands during a Revolutionary Age,” published in Early American Studies (Winter, 2014).
The prize is awarded in any area of borderlands history: “from the Floridas to the Californias, from the sixteenth century to the present, including the northward movement of Spanish-speaking people into the United States in recent times.”

Abstract:
During the late eighteenth century the commanders on Spain’s northern frontier town of Nacogdoches conducted two trials against citizens who sang songs that offended them and challenged their authority. One group sang in French and the other in Spanish, and taken together the two trials offer a unique opportunity to observe and reconstruct the vibrant and original musical culture that developed in this contact zone. By placing the songs in a local, regional, and Atlantic context, this essay shows that the creole ranchers, farmers, and traders of east Texas and west Louisiana invented new songs to retain control of their communities. This essay also suggests that the singers and musicians shared ideas with each other while participating in the creative developments that flourished during the Age of Revolution. Both French and Spanish creoles incorporated subversive subjects into their music, though in the end their ribald and incendiary songs did not lead either group to overthrow the Spanish government. Nonetheless, because the musical compositions posed a threat to Bourbon authorities and foreshadowed future uprisings, an analysis of these cases can help us reimagine revolutionary Texas from a fresh perspective that is at once more Tejano and more transregional.
