Prague Summer Schools are seven-day academic programs from July 2-9 designed to bring together undergraduate and graduate students of various nationalities and academic backgrounds to enjoy their summer holidays in a unique academic and cultural environment.

Georgetown University’s Semester in Washington, D.C. Program (SWP) provides students with a unique opportunity to develop their professional skills and broaden their academic experience in the heart of the nation’s capital. This innovative program, offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters, features a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience, where students have the opportunity to explore the vibrant political and cultural landscape of D.C.

Students will spend part of their time in a classroom setting, where they will hear guest lectures from international experts and business leaders, engage in stimulating group discussions, and explore current events. Throughout the course of the semester, students will also complete a guided independent research project, working closely with a Georgetown Research Advisor as they explore a topic of interest and apply the concepts they have learned.

In addition to academic and research pursuits, students will have an opportunity to either spend several days per week at an internship of their choice or take an elective course through the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program. Georgetown offers students a wide range of internship opportunities, including federal agencies, law firms, news organizations, nonprofits, public relations agencies, and many other reputable connections unique to Washington, D.C.*

At the beginning of the semester, students will choose one of six subject areas as a concentration for their internship and research study:

Environment and Natural Resources Division
Law and Policy Section
The Law and Policy Section (LPS) advises and assists the Assistant Attorney General on legal and policy issues. Working with the Office of Legislative Affairs, LPS coordinates the Environment and Natural Resources Division's legislative program. LPS also represents the Department of Justice on interagency groups of a variety of issues that relate to the mission of the Division. LPS also litigates amicus cases and undertakes other specially assigned litigation projects at the trial and appellate levels. Other duties include monitoring citizen suits; responding to citizen mail, congressional, and FOIA requests; and serving as the Division's ethics officers. LPS attorneys also coordinate the Division's activities on international environmental matters and environmental justice matters.

Duties of the unpaid undergraduate intern position include: attending congressional hearings and reporting on environmental legislation; researching legal and policy issues; and providing support for the section's amicus litigation.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and have maintained residency in the United States for 3 of the past 5 years, with exceptions for U.S. military or government service. If the applicant is a dual citizen, they should be prepared to fill out additional paperwork regarding the dual citizenship. Applicants must pass a mandatory background check. The screening will specifically inquire into an applicant’s police record, payment of taxes, issues of indebtedness, and drug use, specifically within the last year. Applicants should be either enrolled as undergraduates during the internship, or planning on returning to their school in the time period following the conclusion of the internship. They should be willing to commit for about 30 hours per week.

The internship will run roughly from early September to mid December 2015 (dates flexible). Please specify in your cover letter what dates and what hours you are available.

United States Patent and Trademark Office

Lorraine Spector is a Supervisory Patent Examiner in the Training Technology Center, 4100. In that role, she trains newly hired patent examiners from the time they are hired until they progress to their ultimate place in the office four months later. She also gives numerous lectures on legal and other examining-related topics, writes and devises curriculum. This encompasses all levels of Examiner training, including a course on Patent Examination principles for Non-Examiners and special lectures to groups of Patent Examiners from other countries, that come to the USPTO to learn about US Patent Laws, and how the USPTO applies them. Throughout her career, in addition to examining patent applications, Spector has also been responsible for the initial training of over 300 patent examiners.
