Recruitment for GT1000 Team Leaders

Leading Edge is a leadership development experience for undergraduate students at Georgia Tech. Many successful organizations offer leadership coaching to their high-potential employees. It is a top tool for leadership development because it focuses leaders, allowing them to achieve improved results while also allowing them to be more efficient in their work. We want to invest in adapting the real-world practices and approaches of executive leadership coaching to meet the needs of Georgia Tech students while also preparing them for the leadership roles they will have at Tech and beyond.

The Algebra Project is Seeking Six Student Assistants

The Algebra Project is seeking six student assistants for May 2015 - June 2016. Please see the attached information. The Algebra Project (AP) was founded in 1982 by a Harlem-born and Harvard-educated Civil Rights’ leader, Dr. Robert P. Moses through the use of his MacArthur Fellowship award. Over the past two decades, AP grew from teaching math in one school in Cambridge, MA, to more than 200 middle schools across the country by the late 1990s, developing successful models of whole-school and community change.

AP’s unique approach to school reform intentionally develops sustainable, student-centered models by building coalitions of stakeholders within the local communities, particularly the historically underserved population. Since 2000, we have continued to provide the context in which students, schools, parents and communities maximize local resources and take ownership of their own community building and mathematics education reform efforts, which now include high school as well as middle grade initiatives.

The civil rights work in the 1960s culminated in the national response to protect a fundamental right: the right to vote. Our current work seeks a national response to establish a fundamental right: the right of every child to a quality public school education.The Algebra Project is recruiting students from Atlanta area universities for its Atlanta-based program.

Peer Supports Wanted for the New Inclusive Postsecondary Academy

The Inclusive Postsecondary Academy (IPA) at Georgia Tech is a developing four year, two certificate program that provides students with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to engage in the Yellow Jacket experience through participating in college classes, living independently, working in professional internships, and enjoying active social lives.

We are recruiting passionate Georgia Tech students who are interested in making a difference to serve as peer mentors or peer supportsfor the first cohort of IPA students. Peer supports will work with IPA students to achieve academic success, develop a social network, and establish healthy and independent lifestyles.

Speed Mentoring for International Careers This Wednesday

A nonprofit that promotes international education and international careers will be hosting a speed mentoring session this Wednesday 4-6:30PM at the Peachtree Room (in the Student Center (next to Subway) where students can speak briefly with professionals in various international fields.

She's put together quite an impressive lineup including lawyers, consultants, investment bankers, entrepreneurs, CEOs, civil engineers, and industrial engineers.This is a great opportunity for students to meet some successful professionals and learn more about potential career paths to take after graduation. Food and drinks will of course be provided.

Center for Academic Success Hiring

Are you a student who has made As in high-demand courses like Calculus, Organic Chemistry or Physics? Do you have at least a 3.0 GPA and strong communication skills? Consider applying to be a tutor or PLUS-leader (Peer-Led Undergraduate Study) through the Center for Academic Success. Tutors earn $8/hour with a pay increase after completing a mandatory one-hour CETL course.

Opportunities for Seniors with Match Education

Want to be a highly effective educator in urban schools?
Want to volunteer for a year before grad school, law school, or medical school?
Want to get involved in education reform or public policy?
Want to transition into a career in the non-profit or education sector?

If so, consider committing a year to the Match Corps, a one-year urban education service fellowship. Corps members serve full-time in one of our charter schools in Boston, tutoring and mentoring a small caseload of students. They also offer the Match Teacher Residency, so that in addition to tutoring full-time, Corps members can train and earn certification to become full-time teachers in other high-need urban schools. They are currently accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year on a rolling basis (while spots last). Last year Match Corps partnered with the University of Chicago to bring the Match Corps tutoring model to twelve traditional public high schools in Chicago. Our goal at CEISMC is to ensure that K-12 students in Georgia receive the best possible preparation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) as they seek their place in the modern world. Georgia Tech- CEISMC AmeriCorps Mentoring Program is a part of a national network of AmeriCorps Programs. Since 1994, more than 500,000 men and women have served in AmeriCorps, providing needed assistance to millions of Americans to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, homeland security and the environment.

AmeriCorps Academic Mentoring & Enrichment Coordinator
Term of Service: All full-time members must serve 1750 hours over the course of 10 months. The position will begin on October 1, 2013 - July 31, 2014Schedule: 1 full-time, 40 hour/week position

Benefits: Health Insurance, Education Award of $5,550 upon successful completion of AmeriCorps term (1750 hours completed)

Living Allowance: Full-time: $14,500 (stipend)Duties:

Provide weekly mentoring and tutoring to assigned students during the school day

Plan and implement academic support, community service, and service-learning opportunities for students

Develop and implement enrichment activities for afterschool programs

Utilize imagination and resourcefulness in working with kindergarten through 12th grade students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) focused curriculum

Work with school to assist with recruiting and orienting volunteers

Assists Program Director and Outreach Coordinator in maintaining records

Prepares weekly reports

Conducts monthly School Corps meetings, attends weekly professional development meetings, and attends monthly All Corps meetings

Qualifications:

High school diploma required. Prefer college degree (in a STEM related field) with experience working with youth.

Must have a strong interest in service and volunteerism

Mentor Walk!

The Campus Community Partnership Foundation (C2P) Mentor Walk raises awareness of the importance of education and encourages students to stay in school! Join students, educators, parents and the community in a walk on Ga. Tech campus with trained coaches and mentors. Stay for sessions after the walk for students, parents and adults in partnership with Accenture.

Center for Academic Success Services

There are several options to help you out if you are in need of tutoring or help with courses.

1-to-1 Tutoring in more than 70 courses with an emphasis on 1000- and 2000-level courses in the STEM fields. This service is available by appointment through the success.gatech.edu web site. A full list of 1-to-1 Tutoring courses is available here.

Peer-Led Undergraduate Study (PLUS) for some traditionally challenging courses. These peer-facilitated study sessions reinforce study skills that may be applied to most undergraduate classes, especially in the STEM fields. If we offer PLUS for your class, we have already communicated with you. If you think this service might be valuable for your students, please let me know so that we can strategize for future semesters. The fall 2013 PLUS courses and a link to the schedule are available here.

Success Workshops for students who want to develop a specific study skill, such as note-taking, test preparation, or time management (see this semester's schedule here). For students who might need more individualized work on their academic skills, we offer one-on-one Academic Coaching with our professional staff. Coaching is available by appointment at success.gatech.edu.

Drop-in tutoring in science, math, computing, and engineering courses is available on the second floor, and communications-related assistance (written, oral, visual, or electronic) is just a few flights away in the Communication Center on the fourth floor. OMED offers tutoring in Chapin and Clough, and Housing offers the Learning Assistance Program in residence halls.

Event description: Junior Achievement of Georgia needs your support impacting students at Slater Elementary School!

What volunteers will do? Volunteers will use curriculum provided by JA of Georgia to teach children financial literacy skills and economic independence.
Training provided? Training will be scheduled for at least 2 weeks prior to JA Day on Tech’s campus.
Length of commitment? The commitment is a 1 hour training session and then 4 hours on the day of the event.
Transportation needed? JA of Georgia will not be able to provide transportation for volunteers.
