The history honors society induction ceremony and banquet will take place in April.
Please contact Dr. Gerona cgerona3@hts.gatech.edu by Monday, March 7 if you would like to participate in Phi Alpha Theta activities.
Benefits include:
- The School of History and Sociology honors all Phi Alpha Theta members with an honors sash at Graduation.
- Opportunities to gather with the larger community of historians; this includes the historical community at Georgia Tech, as well students and professor regionally, and nationally.
- Opportunities to present papers at state and national conferences, win prizes and scholarships, and publish articles in The Historian.
The society is open to any student regardless of major. Undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours (4 courses) in HTS, achieve a minimum GPA of 3.1 in HTS and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. A maximum of 3 credit hours of online, transfer, or AP credits may be applied to the membership eligibility requirement.
If you are interested please contact the faculty advisor, Carla Gerona, cgerona3@hts.gatech.edu by Monday, March 7. You will need to send Dr. Gerona your name, home mailing address, and email as well as $45.00 (must be cash – preferable – or check payable to Carla Gerona).
Anyone who is interested in participating in PAT events, and has yet to meet the requirements can participate in meetings through the history club.
If anyone is interested in presenting a paper at the Annual PAT Conference at Spelman on April 2nd, please let Dr. Gerona know ASAP.
The Atlanta Business Chronicle is a business journal that is part of the American City Business journals series and covers news on the business and economy in Atlanta. If you are familiar with NPR, Crystal Edmonson, the Broadcast Editor of the Atlanta Business Chronicle, contributes stories to WABE 90.1 FM. Congrats to Courtney on this fantastic recognition!
The Undergraduate House has many important functions, including:
- Expressing the position of the the student body on issues affecting the student experience.
- Formulating the annual Student Activity Fee Budget during the spring semester.
- Allocating Student Activity Fee funds to chartered student organizations throughout the year.
- Modifying the structure and functions of Student Government.
- Approving all amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws of the Student Government Association.
The School of History and Sociology and HTS majors need a voice in the SGA. That voice could be YOURS! Interested in government, politics, and policy? Please consider running. Contact Dr. D'Unger as soon as possible if you are interested.

Bobby Jones Golf Course Clubhouse
On November 7, 1955 the US Supreme Court issued a ruling in the Holmes v. Atlanta case, a ruling that called for the racial desegregation of Atlanta’s public golf courses. This exhibit, “Holmes v. Atlanta: Changing the Game,” commemorates the 60th anniversary of that decision. The plaintiffs in the case were members of a prominent Atlanta African American family: physician Hamilton M. Holmes, and his two sons, Reverend Oliver Wendell Holmes and Alfred F. “Tup” Holmes.
The spirit of the Supreme Court’s ruling followed their landmark 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education which overturned the legality of “separate but equal” state education laws. Holmes v. Atlanta was among the first cases to extend this precedent beyond education into other public accommodations and arguably had a more immediate impact. Fittingly, Oliver and Tup Holmes along with Charles Bell played the North Fulton golf course on December 24 and the Bobby Jones course on December 25, 1955 thus desegregating Atlanta public golf courses. As Atlanta historians Norman Shavin and Bruce Galpin observe, “the first scene of court-ordered desegregation in Georgia was a golf course and not a school house” further suggesting the case’s significance. This exhibition retells this story and shares the broader “game changing” impact of Holmes v. Atlanta.

This exhibition has been researched and created with the help of HSOC undergraduate students, Anna Arnau, Ericka Brundage, and Hayden Gregg. Special thanks to Jennifer Sterling and Renee Shelby for providing a great deal of labor and oversight for this project.
This networking opportunity will bring together current students, alumni/alumnae, faculty, and staff. Two recent alumnae - Glo Ross (HSOC) and Susan Robinson (DM/LMC) - will give brief remarks. Refreshments will be served!
Please join us for Phi Alpha Theta and the History Club's fall tea on Monday, October 19 at 3:00. All HTS majors, minors, and students who are interested in history are invited. This is a chance for HTS students to touch base with each other and plan any special events for the rest of the academic year. The School of History, Technology, and Society is now officially the School of History and Sociology! The change reflects the importance of both disciplines in the school and acknowledges that--while the faculty are leaders in the study of science, technology, and medicine--they also do research on a wide variety of other things.
The new abbreviation for the school will be HSOC. Both the undergraduate and graduate degree names (BS- History, Technology, and Society; MS & PhD- History and Sociology of Technology and Science) and the course prefixes (HIST, HTS, SOC) will remain the same.
