Undergraduate research at Tech will be showcased on Tuesday, April 19th (tomorrow) at the 11th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium http://urop.gatech.edu/2016-symposium in the Student Center Ballroom and surrounding rooms. Approximately 200 students will present their work on medical advances in multiple fields, sustainable building design, regeneration, even a wristband that digitizes handwriting on 2D surfaces, plus much, much more! Over 160 presentations with reception to follow (presentations 1-4:30pm | reception 4:30-6pm). The full symposium program is online here.
In an effort to showcase our campus, The Office of Undergraduate Admission has partnered with Institute Communications and others at Tech to produce a new virtual tour. It does a nice job setting out campus and showcasing the GT buildings. It also helps highlight Tech's "park-like" feel, which many — from 20 miles away — don't appreciate, let alone those 2,000 miles from Atlanta.

Tech companies are hiring more liberal-arts majors than you think
Washington Post - August 26, 2015
Silicon Valley has a reputation for being filled with egghead coders who popped out of college as brilliant engineers (or who never finished college in the first place). Films like "The Social Network" have played a big role in popularizing this impression. Google, too, is notorious for putting job candidates through grueling programming tests. Against these geniuses, what hope would a humanities or social science major have of getting a job at one of these companies? Quite a lot, actually. In fact, liberal arts graduates joined the ranks of tech companies at a faster clip in the past few years than their engineering and computer-science counterparts, according an analysis by LinkedIn of its own users. And of the recent liberal arts grads the company examined, as many as 2 in 5 now work at an Internet or software company. That's a staggering number.

That 'Useless' Liberal Arts Degree Has Become Tech's Hottest Ticket
Throughout the major U.S. tech hubs, whether Silicon Valley or Seattle, Boston or Austin, Tex., software companies are discovering that liberal arts thinking makes them stronger. Engineers may still command the biggest salaries, but at disruptive juggernauts such as Facebook and Uber, the war for talent has moved to nontechnical jobs, particularly sales and marketing. The more that audacious coders dream of changing the world, the more they need to fill their companies with social alchemists who can connect with customers–and make progress seem pleasant.

Arjun Bir is a student at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering who is passionate about finding solutions to the world's most pressing problems.
He just founded an organization called Open Source Development that he believes can revolutionize the way we tackle the world's most pressing problems by enabling collective problem solving on a global scale in a way that hasn't been done before. It is a radical approach to technology innovation and dissemination to impact human health, development, and well-being globally.
He has worked with the organization's mentors (who are among the most accomplished minds in the field of development) to create the model, and now they looking to form a talented and passionate team to build on these ideas and convert them into reality.
They are having a launch event this Friday between 4:00pm and 5:00pm at the Clary Theater in the Student Success Center, where they will be unveiling our model for the first time.

OIT issues alert after some respond to phishing scam
Georgia Tech’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) has identified a “phishing” incident that occurred on November 10, 2014. The situation involved the distribution of a fraudulent email message with the subject line, “Message From Georgia Institute of Technology,” sent to members of the campus community asking recipients to click on a link and provide their Georgia Tech account username and password. While the Web page looked like the Georgia Tech login page, it was a fake version designed to capture this information.
Although OIT was able to secure Georgia Tech’s “cyber borders” within 15-30 minutes after the fraudulent message was distributed, a small number of faculty, staff, and students responded to the email sharing their usernames and passwords. In a limited number of instances, this information was then used to access personal information.

Karen Stevenson is a new Board member of the Georgia Solar Energy Association with a strategic communications background. She would like to establish in 2015 an outreach to the entire state of Georgia that introduces the GSEA (we are a nonprofit) and establishes the GSEA as the go-to organization to ask questions and get answers about the solar industry. The solar industry is growing around the nation and it is the hope of the organization to put some basic information in front of policy people (county commissioners, mayors, city councils of major GA cities, etc.) so they can be better informed about the solar industry and how it is developing in Georgia and around the country.
The "Database" project is simple: 1) to research, using public information portals, the names, titles, emails and titles: (city, county, region) for elected officials across all 159 Georgia counties, 2) Establish a GSEA database using this information for educational use (Enews), 3) to use these same students to focus group test information we will compile (and students are invited to help with this if they like!) to develop an orderly "flow" to how we roll out a basic primer on the solar industry in Georgia and how this information compares with national industry data.
We will either send out 4 E-newsletters (one each quarter) or 6 E-newsletters (one each two months) for a total or 4 or 6 over the entirety of 2015. The information we compile will determine the proper number of E-newsletters. For 2015, six would be the maximum. If the project is successful, we would either keep the same number for 2016 (4 or 6) or grow the E-news to one each month (12) if the information and enthusiasm warranted an expansion. That would be determined much later in 2015.
The time-line for this project would be January or February 2015 so 2-3 months.
Information about the Georgia Solar Energy Association (GSEA) can be found at www.gasolar.org. Under the "Mission" tab is a listing of staff, Board Members along with our backgrounds, and sponsors. Many Board members and "members" are owners of solar companies in Georgia and throughout the southeast. You can find more information about Karen at my business website: www.kyscomm.com.
