ThinkBig Communities Explore Yearlong Topics

ThinkBig Lets Students Explore Yearlong Special TopicsTaking a backstage tour of the Fox Theatre, attending a Braves game, and getting to know a professor’s family are just a few things students have experienced through ThinkBig that they might not have otherwise.

ThinkBig living-learning communities give students the chance to pursue a topic, academic or extracurricular, throughout the year under the leadership of a dedicated faculty member. Participants live in designated areas of residence halls, meet with faculty leaders for informal discussions, and participate in outings related to their community’s topic.

ThinkBig Registration DEADLINE TOMORROW

ThinkBig Kids@Nature community is a program led by Dr. Alfred Merrill, a Biology professor, where he and the students take inner city children and youth to outdoor activities a time or two each month, and the community meets once a week for 45 minutes to 1 hour in an informal setting in or near the residence hall that houses the community, with refreshments provided.  (Please note: ThinkBig is only for students who intend to live in campus housing for the 2013-14 academic year)  You can get more information about the program at www.thinkbig.gatech.edu.

Most communities meet on Tuesday or Thursday starting in the late afternoon or early evening, and all meet weekly. Registration deadline is Feb. 28 at 11:58 PM at the GT Housing web site. Students who have previously signed up for Housing can access their applications and amend them to join a ThinkBig community until 11:58 pm on Thursday, Feb. 28.

It’s spring semester, and you know what that means—time to start thinking about the fall! What classes are you going to take? Where are you going to live? The housing sign-up period for fall 2013 is February 5-28. If you are interested in living-learning communities, why not consider joining ThinkBig?

ThinkBig Communities - HTS Faculty Member

ThinkBig communities give students the chance to pursue a topic throughout the year under the leadership of a dedicated faculty member. ThinkBig students live in designated areas of residence halls, meet weekly with faculty leaders for informal discussions and participate in outings related to the topic.

“They actually offer tours of the Fox all the time, but I never would have known were it not for ThinkBig,” said Allen, a third-year biochemistry major from Acworth. Allen is part of ThinkBig’s community known as ATL: the 411 on the 404, one of nine living-learning communities being offered to students for the 2013-14 academic year.  
“It’s unlike any other way to get to know a professor,” Allen said. “It’s refreshing that they want to spend time with students, and it makes you realize some faculty really do care about students.” The ATL community wasn’t originally her and her roommate’s first choice for ThinkBig, but they enjoyed it and Doug Flamming’s leadership so much the first year that they signed up for a second year.

Most professors work with students at the beginning of the program and then throughout the year to get ideas for outings, as well as to ensure that the ThinkBig experience is shaped by student preferences. This approach is in keeping with Georgia Tech’s 25-year strategic plan to enrich the student experience through increased student-faculty interaction.

A $150 fee per semester covers ThinkBig participation, including costs associated with outings, food or programming. Other funding comes from the Center for Academic Enrichment and Department of Housing.

Sponsored by Georgia Tech Undergraduate Studies and the Department of Housing-Residence Life, ThinkBig@Tech communities are designed to bring exciting out-of-the-classroom experiences to you through VIP-style events, meaningful interactions with your peers and a professor, and a community where you are able to dive into a topic of your choice. This interaction is fun and engaging, allowing you to explore something outside the classroom—not more "homework!"
