Are you passionate about global change, committed to learning by doing, and ready to engage in hands-on global development?
GESI will equip students to:
- Work directly with local communities and community organizations in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Kenya, Nicaragua, India, South Africa, or Uganda
- Earn two Northwestern course credits (the equivalent to six semester credits)
- Live with a host family and immerse yourself in another culture for eight weeks
- Work in teams of undergraduates to design and implement a development project collaboratively in microfinance, social enterprise, education, environmental sustainability, global health, and more
Engage directly with local communities:
GESI 2014 - Uganda:
GESI participants worked with community members and a rural development group to assist a community with income generation. The community’s sole source of income is selling fish they’ve caught and dried on the shore, though the drying process is long, unsanitary, and usually results in significant portions of soiled fish. The GESI team used regional case studies to design a solar dryer for the community’s fish, using locally sourced materials, thereby saving time, effort, and ensuring a more sanitary product. The team and community worked together to build the solar dryer, and materials that explain the building process for further replications. They also assisted the community in creating a nutrition garden, as well as organic fertilizers and pesticides.
GESI 2014 - Bolivia:
The team worked with a local NGO that serves families and their children with disabilities by providing therapy and information about legal rights access to opportunities. Appointments with the NGO staff were often missed by parents, due to a lack of understanding about the importance of treatment. The GESI team worked to dissolve the stigma surrounding disabilities by creating and providing materials for families to learn about the rights of their children under Bolivian law. They also ensured videos educating families about their rights and the needs of their children, are shown throughout the NGO.

This advanced seminar is offered spring 2011. It is open to advanced undergraduates and graduate students. (Interested faculty are invited to participate as well.) Students from PUBP, INTA, HTS are especially encouraged.
Globalization and global governance have attracted considerable attention in recent decades. These phenomena, however, have deep and familiar roots in the development of functional sectors like transportation (including railroads, surface roads, and air transport,) communications (telegraph, telephone, broadcast, and Internet,) resource management (watersheds, global climate,), and economic development (local, regional, and national.) We use the terms “system” to refer to these socio-economic-technical sectors.

The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs hosts a Model United Nations conference each Fall Break (mid-October) for approximately 700 high school students from the southeast and beyond. We are looking for students to help research and plan this conference. The students will be the Directors and Assistant Directors for the 2011 Conference. Directors and Assistant Directors form the core of the conference staff, and they are responsible for running one of a dozen or so committees consisting of anywhere from 30 to 80 students. Committees range from the IAEA to GA2 (Economic and Financial); from the Security Council to the African Union; from the Commission for Science and Technology for Development to the UN Environmental Programme.
The INTA department offers a class (INTA 4812/8802) for anyone interested in becoming involved for the first time in the Georgia Tech Model United Nations (GTMUN) conference. This is an opportunity for anyone involved with the conference to get two credit hours for his or her work. The majority of the work will be done outside of class. This is for students who are serious about being a part of the Model UN Conference in the fall. The class will be graded on the timely completion of several small research papers (due throughout the semester) on topics of your choice (working in teams of two). The class is a good means to earn social science credit and become a confident committee director.
Additionally, GTMUN offers the opportunity to enhance public speaking, researching, writing, and leadership skills as GT students help educate high school students about the pressing issues facing the international system today.

Miami University offers these graduate-credit courses at a fraction of actual costs to engage a diverse group of educators and other professionals in global leadership, inquiry and environmental stewardship. The $1,250 course cost includes all basic in-country expenses and tuition for seven graduate credit hours. Accepted students are responsible for airfare.
Offered through a collaboration among Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden and other partners, Earth Expeditions has engaged more than 1,000 U.S. and international educators and other professionals in extraordinary learning opportunities worldwide. In addition to Australia and Guyana, course sites for 2011 include the Amazon, Baja, Belize, Borneo, Costa Rica, Kenya, Mongolia, Namibia, Thailand and Trinidad.
Earth Expeditions courses are designed for educators and other professionals from all disciplines and settings interested in making a difference in human and ecological communities.
