Did you know that some unpaid internships can be done for academic credit, while paid internships such as the Pre-Teaching internships can be done for audit credit? Audit credit serves as a place holder during the semester but does not count towards the total hours needed to graduate. For example, if you have an internship for six audit credit hours, you only need six more for full-time student status. You do not receive academic credit for the internship, but you also do not pay tuition or fees on the internship hours. Audit credit also assures that your internship goes on your transcript as part of your permanent academic record. Apply for a Pre-Teaching internship!

The Algebra Project​ is seeking six student assistants for May 2015 - June 2016. Please see the attached information. The Algebra Project (AP) was founded in 1982 by a Harlem-born and Harvard-educated Civil Rights’ leader, Dr. Robert P. Moses through the use of his MacArthur Fellowship​ award. Over the past two decades, AP grew from teaching math in one school in Cambridge, MA, to more than 200 middle schools across the country by the late 1990s, developing successful models of whole-school and community change.

AP’s unique approach to school reform intentionally develops sustainable, student-centered models by building coalitions of stakeholders within the local communities, particularly the historically underserved population. Since 2000, we have continued to provide the context in which students, schools, parents and communities maximize local resources and take ownership of their own community building and mathematics education reform efforts, which now include high school as well as middle grade initiatives.

The civil rights work in the 1960s culminated in the national response to protect a fundamental right: the right to vote. Our current work seeks a national response to establish a fundamental right: the right of every child to a quality public school education.​The Algebra Project is recruiting students from Atlanta area universities for its Atlanta-based program.

BREAKTHROUGH ATLANTA SUMMER TEACHER RESIDENCY INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE

Breakthrough Atlanta is a year round academic enrichment program for students in the Atlanta Public Schools system. Beginning in the summer before entering 7th grade, students partake in a beneficial, rigorous, and fun-filled curriculum of math, history, science, and language arts. They also take part in exciting cultural programs and electives such as drama, dance, basketball, and more.

Any Georgia Tech undergraduate student who interns with Breakthrough Atlanta can also receive 12 audit internship credit hours through the Georgia Tech Center for Career Discovery and Development (C2D2). To receive internship credit, students must be currently enrolled, have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA, and be in good academic standing. There is no credit hour minimum requirement nor is there a need for specific major. Students who do not meet the Georgia Tech internship eligibility requirements but still meet Breakthrough Atlanta’s application requirements should still apply.

The International Rescue Committee Atlanta’s Youth Education Department has expanded and is in need of many volunteers to support their after-school program as well as a couple of interns to provide in-office support. The International Rescue Committee is looking for interpreter volunteers, education volunteers, and education interns.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 21,000 refugees from nearly 50 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 800 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 1,500 refugees and asylees.

HORIZONS GEORGIA TECH PRE-TEACHING INTERNSHIP

The Horizons at Georgia Tech Program is looking for talented and energetic individuals to work as Intern Assistant Teachers in a six-week academic enrichment summer program. We are looking for professional, responsible, and caring individuals. Assistant Teachers work to implement strategies to engage students in active learning through non-traditional, hands-on activities in our six-week summer program. Horizons Assistant Teachers work alongside a certified lead teacher with approximately 15 students in small group and individual instruction in mathematics, reading, and science. A successful Assistant Teacher will enjoy working with youth and as a team player to help fulfill the Horizons mission. 

A typical day may include academics, arts, swimming, breakfast/lunch and recreational activities. Teaching Assistants will also be responsible for bus monitoring, lunch monitoring, bus loading/drop off, and pick-up coordination as well as attending all field trips. Other duties may also be required.

System Specialist

Each fall, TEAM Buzz provides a chance for the Tech community to give back to surrounding neighborhoods through hands-on volunteerism. This year, student organizers expect around 2,000 student, faculty, and staff volunteers to meet at the Kessler Campanile on Saturday, Oct. 25, before spreading out across the city.

Students, faculty, and staff work together at Bright Futures on Atlanta’s Westside. The annual TEAM Buzz Service Day typically draws more than 2,000 faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Project signups open Tuesday, Oct. 14, at teambuzz.org. Projects include activities such as planting, park cleanup, tutoring, sorting books and other media, and caring for animals. Those interested can sign up alone or with friends, co-workers, or family, and choose from more than 40 projects around Atlanta.

This year, TEAM Buzz is providing free child care to children of faculty and staff to enable their participation. Qualified students will serve as caretakers for the day and be stationed at the Student Center. Children will also participate in service activities, including making crafts and writing letters to hospital patients. The event runs from around 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Techwood Tutorial Project (TTP) is a volunteer program that pairs Georgia Tech students with children from local elementary schools for weekly one-on-one tutoring. TTP also plans a group outing for tutors and their tutees during the semester. These outings promote the friendship and mentoring that is a vital part of our program.

To be a TTP tutor, you must be able to dedicate at least one hour per week to your child for two semesters. Your commitment is very important; many of these children have had adults walk in and out of their lives, and we do not want to contribute to the cycle. In addition, as a TTP tutor you must come to at least one outing per semester as well as a short monthly meeting on campus. TTP tutors must have a desire to be a positive role model and to improve a child's life.

Heather Williams, the Regional Operations Director for WINGS for kids, a local non-profit organization, is looking for a student employee for the 2014-2015 school year. WINGS is an education program that teaches kids how to behave well, make good decisions and build healthy relationships. We do this by weaving a comprehensive social and emotional learning curriculum into a fresh and fun after school program. Kids get the life lessons they need to succeed and be happy and they get a safe place to call home after school.

Student organization YEP! mentors young K-5 students at the Bellwood Boys & Girls club every Friday afternoon, and often centers weekly visits around themes such as science and sports. The third annual Bellwood Health Day will be held on Friday, April 11, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., where YEP! volunteers will raise awareness about nutrition and distribute healthy snacks, t-shirts, and jump ropes to kids at Bellwood. Horizons Georgia Tech - deadline February 24, 2014

Horizons Georgia Tech is a partnership between the Georgia Tech Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) and Horizons National. Horizons Georgia Tech seeks to help children of limited financial means to find success in school, prevent the Summer Slide, and develop goals for themselves, including high school graduation and participation in post-secondary educational experiences. Horizons is committed to the development of the whole child through experiences that build problem-solving skills, foster awareness of community responsibility, instill respect for oneself and others, and encourage a life-long interest in learning. All Horizons Georgia Tech students learn to swim in order to build confidence and an awareness of safety. The Horizons Georgia Tech Program will serve 1st through 6th graders in 2014. Hands-on and project-based learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) are core components of the program for the students.

TIP offers numerous academic residential summer programs for students in grades 5 - 12. 

An organization at Georgia Tech, BOPSOP, is currently looking for volunteers for this semester. BOPSOP is a non-profit tutoring and mentoring organization that works to positively impact the lives of inner-city youth. As a reflection of our goals, BOPSOP is an acronym for "Believe Our Purpose, Share Our Plan." The purpose of BOPSOP is to enhance the lives of youth in the Atlanta area through youth mentoring and tutoring. This program is a three hour commitment/week Monday-Thursday 3pm-6pm. Grady High School (less than two miles from GT and a short 5 minute walk from Midtown Station) will host Atlanta Public School's annual One Academic Fair on Tuesday November 19th, 2013. The school is looking for judges to judge projects in math, science or social studies categories. In previous years their students have moved on to the state and national level with their projects.

This is a great way to give your time to the Atlanta community. If you could judge or you might know someone who would be able to judge, the time slots are 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., 12:30- 3 p.m. or all day. They will have food and beverages available throughout the day. CRISIS is Duke TIP’s summer residential program for talent search students who have completed the fifth or sixth grades. CRISIS offers you a three-week employment opportunity to work with these academically gifted students. You will work with a new group of students each week and must commit to working the entire term. As a CRISIS staff member you will help students build leadership and teamwork skills as they collaborate to solve a community crisis. Each week students spend 30 hours on instructional and research activities and an additional 15 hours on leadership, team-building, and recreational activities. An administrative team oversees student supervision and manages program operations. Highly qualified instructor/teaching assistant teams lead research teams of approximately 14 students each. Outside the classroom, a carefully selected staff of residential counselors supervises students during meals, free time, and planned social and recreational activities.
