The International Rescue Committee Atlanta’s Youth Education Department has expanded and is in need of many volunteers to support their after-school program as well as a couple of interns to provide in-office support. The International Rescue Committee is looking for interpreter volunteers, education volunteers, and education interns.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 21,000 refugees from nearly 50 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 800 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 1,500 refugees and asylees.

SCOPE OF YOUTH EDUCATION INTERPRETERS WORK: 

The International Student Center Culture Orientation classes start in the beginning of the New Year. Instruction is focused on developing vocabulary and confidence for dealing with real world situations such as shopping, public transportation, employment, and other daily living skills. Interpreters will help in instruction in the following languages: Arabic, Burmese, Kinyarwanda, Nepali, Somali, and Swahili


RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist instructor in daily classroom activities including one-on-one tutoring, leading small groups, and teaching specific components of the curriculum
  • Interpreting in either Arabic, Burmese, Kinyarwanda, Nepali, Somali or Swahili
  • Support program activities by researching new curriculum content and preparing educational materials as requested by instructor
  • Assist instructor to administer assessment tools to evaluate students’ progress during course of study and appropriate placement into a class level
  • Assist with record-keeping, data entry, and file maintenance to support program administration
REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Availability for at least 2 hours at a time from 3:15-5:30 Monday-Thursday
  • Fluency in Arabic, Burmese, Kinyarwanda, Nepali, Somali, or Swahili
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Previous teaching experience a plus
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently 
  • Comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment; international experience a plus
  • Enthusiasm, positive attitude

SCOPE OF YOUTH EDUCATION INTERNS WORK:

The Youth Services Intern will report to the Youth Program Supervisor. This position is for 12-20 hours a week and is part-time. The hours for this position would be between 9am and 6pm. A significant portion of this internship will be dedicated to the Youth Futures and the My New School After-school Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain relationships with DeKalb County Schools
  • Build mentoring relationships with youth 
  • Provide other program and general administrative support as needed
  • Provide regular feedback and suggestion for future program design
  • Participate in weekly Youth Program Staff meeting
  • Assist Youth Case Manager with program logistics
  • Maintain confidential student information.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Organized with attention to detail
  • Able to work independently and under pressure
  • An interest in international and refugee issues
  • Experience working with youth and/or young adults is preferred but not required
  • Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects
  • Experience and/or strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Computer literacy – preferably with PC systems
  • Experience with secondary and post-secondary education system in Georgia is a plus
  • A car/driver’s license is beneficial
  • Must feel comfortable with tutoring in high school subjects
  • Ability to commit to a regular schedule with the After-School Program
