Perfectionism and procrastination are key ingredients in the recipe for stress and inefficiency. In this workshop, participants will learn some strategies for overcoming perfectionism and for putting an end to procrastination, thereby decreasing their overall stress.

The presentation of PostSecret: The Show at the Ferst Center next week offers the campus several opportunities to address hidden issues or problems that many are facing but may be afraid to discuss. From a panel on suicide prevention, to special mailboxes where you can deliver a secret, to the show itself, the Georgia Tech Counseling Center and the Office of the Arts invite the community to participate.


When: Monday, February 1 at 6 pm
Where: Ferst Center for the Arts Gallery

Join the Georgia Tech community as we come together to start a conversation to help prevent suicide on our campus. Talk with Frank Warren, the creator of PostSecret, and learn from mental health professionals how you can help. See more information here.

PostSecret: The Show is a visual, auditory and emotional journey through the beauty and complication of our deepest fears, ambitions, and confessions. With the assistance of projected images and video, three actors guide the audience through stories sourced from over a million anonymous and artful secrets mailed on postcards to artist, curator, and internet phenomenon Frank Warren. The show reaches beyond the confines of the stage, reminding audiences that no matter what you may be facing, you are not alone. (Mature content, not recommended for children)

GT Staff and Faculty Tickets for the performance are half price starting Friday, February 5 at 10 am. Each GT employee can get up to two tickets at half price. Please purchase in person from the Ferst Center Box Office, M-F, 10-6, (and one hour before show time) and present your BuzzCard for ID.

Stress Management Workshop Tomorrow

This workshop covers the basics of stress management, including identifying your current stress level, identifying common stressors, and learning some useful tools in reducing your stress.

We invite students to join us at the Augusta University College of Education (formerly Georgia Regents University) on Oct. 1 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in University Hall for a Graduate Programs Open House. 

Students will meet with faculty in a series of small groups to discuss our graduate programs in education, counseling, and kinesiology. 

Students Wanted as Peer Counselors

Helping Hands: Students Wanted to Serve as Peer CounselorsStudent mental health remains top of mind for colleges and universities nationwide, including Georgia Tech. This year, a new peer counseling initiative is taking shape on campus to let students help one another as they face mental health issues.

The peer counseling initiative is a part of Burdell’s Buddies, a program through the Counseling Center that focuses on raising awareness of mental health issues and promoting the use of campus, professional, and personal resources. Applications are now open, and due April 3, for students who are interested in being trained to serve as peer counselors.

College can be a very stressful time for students, whether that’s due to academic pressure or issues in their personal lives. What some students may not realize is that Georgia Tech provides many resources for students to deal with these stressful situations.

The Counseling Center provides not only individual counseling services, but also workshops that aim to help students reduce stress during peak times so that they may perform to their highest ability. Topics include creating healthy relationships, overcoming stress and procrastination, and exploring spiritual wellness.

Workshop on Helping a Friend in Distress

The Counseling Center is sponsoring a workshop in which you will learn how to identify characteristics of someone in distress, how to be supportive when your friends are struggling and where to find additional support resources. An emphasis will be on learning the difference between stress and distress, and finding effective help for each type of need.

 The Center for Academic Success if offering two programs for students wishing to improve their academic performance--the Success Summit (this Friday) and the ReBoot program.  Both are free and open to anyone wishing to improve their performance, not just those who have below a 2.20 GPA.

Reboot is an academic recovery program for first- and second-year students who are not meeting their own academic expectations. This program provides students an extended opportunity to work with staff members and to develop customized success plans. Cohort members also gain access to additional academic support services including tutoring, workshops, academic coaching, PLUS sessions, and study hours. If you are a first or second-year student with a cumulative GT GPA of 2.2 or lower, Reboot could be an important part of your plan for academic success. Students can register now, at success.gatech.edu. The Fall 2013 program will meet on Fridays from 1:05-1:55. The first session will be on Friday, August 30th, in Clough Commons (room TBA).

The Success Summit (this Friday, 23 August!) is a halfday program especially designed for Tech students who are on Academic Probation or Warning and who want to make changes and move into Good Standing. Students attending the Summit can choose from panels and workshops on various topics to help them set and achieve academic goals this semester. The Summit is on Friday, August 23rd, in the afternoon, from 1:00-4:30, in Clough Commons. For more information, and to register, go to success.gatech.edu.


Stressed or Distressed?

The Georgia Tech Counseling Center has a Counselor On Call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, who can be reached by calling 404-894-2575. For non-urgent matters, it is best to call during regular business hours (M-F 8-5). After hours, your call will be answered by the Georgia Tech Police Dispatcher who will contact the Counselor On Call, who will then return your call promptly.

Working at day and overnight summer camps is an excellent way to gain valuable teaching and mentoring experience.

Concordia Language Villages - Can you speak Arabic, Finnish, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, French, Korean, Spanish, Danish, German, Norwegian,Swedish, English, Italian or Portuguese? Consider being a camp counselor at a language immersion camp.



College years can be a challenging time for many students. The Counseling Center begins its semesterly Stress Management Series this Thursday, offering weekly casual discussions open to students, faculty and staff to talk about various stress factors and coping methods. This is one way the Center provides opportunities to help the Tech community manage stress.

The Fall Stress Management Series meets every week at 11 am in Room 1315 in the Klaus Building.
