JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Director of Historic Resources and Education Programs
Reports To: Executive Director
Position Classification: Exempt Regular Full-time
The primary responsibility of the Director of Historic Resources and Education Programs is to plan, develop, implement, and manage high-quality, year-round educational programming for all audiences that reflects Heritage Sandy Springs’ (HSS) mission and meets the needs of the diverse audiences we serve. The Director also oversees the exhibition programming of the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum, and conducts research of Sandy Springs history to strengthen and support educational and museum programming.
Required Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to develop, promote and present educational programs. Outstanding interpersonal skills; strong time management and multitasking abilities; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent supervisory ability and team-building skills. Understanding of marketing strategies needed to grow and publicize programs; strong detail orientation and commitment to accuracy; budget management skills; ability to prepare reports, track data and prepare analysis as needed; ability to work independently within a flexible team environment; ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups, and ability to use Microsoft Office applications and Past Perfect archive software.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in museum studies, history, education, or related degree and at least three years experience and proven success in developing and presenting multi-disciplinary, education-based programs to the public in a not-for-profit or museum setting. Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Job Responsibilities:
Plan, develop, and manage vibrant, year-round educational programming. Coordinate and implement traditional and non-traditional program offerings for visitors of all ages and stages, for example: lectures, museum and historic grounds tours, in-school and out-of-school outreach, Scout programs, films, family days, community days, opening events, special interest group workshops, online exhibitions, etc.
Develop and implement curriculum-based education programs for ages PK-12 including on-site guided tours, off-site outreach, workshops, and resources. Manage and develop partnerships with schools to offer curriculum-based programs related to the history of Sandy Springs, in the Museum and/or the schools.
Establish standards for all education programming; evaluate programming and track measurable outcomes.
Write and develop tour program curriculum of Heritage Sandy Springs Museum and gardens of Heritage Green. Arrange and provide tours for the general public, school and special-interest groups, program partners, featured guests, and others on a regular basis. Actively pursue tour groups and conduct tours when necessary.
Initiate, develop and manage adult education programs with the intent of encouraging lifelong learning, promoting institutional awareness and membership, and reaching beyond the traditional demographic boundaries including presentations, demonstrations, lectures, seminars, participatory activities, special events and classes.
Work with museum consultants, staff, and Board leadership to plan and develop the HSS Museum exhibition calendar. Lead and direct exhibit development process from early concept through design and fabrication to installation and project completion; continue to manage exhibits while on display.
Update existing exhibits and work with internal and external resources to develop and stage new permanent, temporary and travelling exhibits.
Serve as curator and registrar of Museum archives and artifacts, adhering to museum industry standards for the presentation and care of artifacts.
Perform ongoing research on the history of Sandy Springs. Provide content and research for exhibitions, online learning and online exhibitions
Recruit, train and supervise volunteers involved in program delivery and archive management. Develop and manage docent program to support museum operations.
Collaborate with development staff on fund-raising efforts for exhibition and educational programs.
Provide written program content as needed and collaborate with the communications department on successful marketing, creation of collateral materials, and development of digital media in support of public programs.
Collaborate with Board and executive leadership in establishing strategic long-range programmatic and institutional goals.
