International Education Week Schedule

Georgia Tech celebrates International Education Week (IEW) each year with a series of events that highlight Tech's international opportunities and that recognize the international accomplishments of Tech students, faculty, and staff. Events this year include a Brazilian Culture Night & International Coffee Hour (Monday), an immigration attorney discussing post-student immigration issues and international alumni panel (Wednesday), a screening of Girl Rising (Thursday), and a distinguished expert speaker discussing current issues of the Middle East (Friday). 

We're excited to have you join in Georgia Tech's celebration of International Education Week 2014. Please find a full schedule of activities below.
Monday (November 17)
  • Free Hot Chocolate: 9-11am, Tech Walkway, Find out more about International Education Week by picking up your 'passport' to the week of event! Grab a cup of hot chocolate with Buzz!
  • IEW Kick Off: 11-1pm, Clough Atrium, Come ‘put yourself on the map’ with Buzz! Stop by the Clough Atrium to say hi to Buzz and put stickers on our world map to show us where you’ve been, where you’re from and where you are going!
  • J-1 Employment: 1-2pm, Savant Room 308, J-1 students interested in working in the U.S before or after graduation should attend this session to learn about their employment authorization options.
  • 21st Challenges to Space Security: Lecture by James Clay Moltz. 1-2pm, Habersham Room G-17. Hosted by the Center for International Strategy, Technology and Policy (CISTP)
  • International Coffee Hour and Brazilian Culture Night: 6-8pm, Tech Rec, Brazilian Culture Night hosted by BRASA, Global Jackets, and OIE.
Tuesday (November 18)
  • Barnga: 11:30-1pm, Student Center Commons Piedmont Room, Students, faculty and staff are invited to come play the fun, interactive game of Barnga. Join us to see how subtle differences in cultures can lead to great misunderstandings and culture shock even when all parties are aware of these differences.
  • Communicating the Value of the IP: 5-6:30pm, Savant Room 308, This workshop will assist International Plan students in articulating the value of the IP in professional settings such as job fairs and interviews. This event is most appropriate for IP Juniors and Seniors, but any IP student is welcome to attend. Please RSVP to internationalplan@oie.gatech.edu
  • Ritmo Latino: 6-8pm, Tech Rec, Have you ever wanted to learn how to salsa dance? Come on out for an evening of performances and instruction! Light refreshments will be provided. Sponsored by the GT Salsa Club and Global Jackets.
Wednesday (November 19)
  • Ten Thouand Villages and Language Cafe: 11-2pm, Student Center Commons Peachtree Rm, Explore the world without leaving Tech. Browse fair trade products from around the world and tour other cultures with GT English Language Institute students.
  • Origami Workshop: 1-2pm, Bill Moore Student Success Center President Suite A, Learn how to fold Origami by the ATL Konichiwa Club.
  • Yoga: 4-5pm, Studio B, Campus Recreation Center. Come to a free class (fee-paying students only) and work on your balance, coordination, and posture. 
  • Belly Dancing: 5-6pm, Studio A, Campus Recreation Center. Come to a free class (fee-paying students only) and learn an ancient form of dance that originates in the Middle East.
  • The Nuts and Bolts of Immigration Sponsorship in the U.S: Informational Presentation with Immigration Lawyer Chuck Kuck. 6-7:30pm, Student Center Theater, The Office of International Education will be hosting an informational presentation covering employment and family based pathways for temporary and permanent visas in the U.S. including H1B work visas and avenues for legal permanent residency in the U.S. This session will be led by Chuck Kuck from Kuck Immigration Partners, LLC.
  • International Alumni Panel: 7:30pm, Student Center Theater, Come to this session to hear stories and tips from GA Tech international almuni. Alums currently working in the U.S job market will discuss their experiences searching and gaining employment in the United States. The panel will also provide their thoughts on working for U.S companies and academic institutions and how it compares to their employment experiences abroad. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask the panel questions.
Thursday (November 20)
  • inSight Conference: Discussing the World: All Day, Bill Moore Student Success Center, The inSight Conference aims to provide the Atlanta community with an opportunity to discuss and learn about other countries and international case studies in an academic and professional setting. Hosted by BRASA - the GT Brazilian Student Association. Register at www.insight.gatech.edu.
  • Buzzwords: 11-12:30pm, Tech Walkway, Come learn about non-English languages spoken on campus - This is an informal drop-in event open to everyone. 
  • How to Find an International Internship: 11-noon, Bill Moore Student Success Center President Suite A, Interesting in interning abroad? Find something that works for you at this session.
  • OIE Photo Contest Reception: 2-3pm, Clough Commons 3rd Floor, The Photo Contest Reception will officially recognize the 2014 OIE Photo Contest winners and reveal the Facebook Favorite winner. All are welcome!
  • GT-Shenzhen: Study Abroad!: 4-5pm, Student Center Rm 301, Come learn about the new campus in China and how you can study abroad in this vibrant city. www.shenzhen.gatech.edu
  • Girl Rising Movie and Discussion: 6-8pm, Student Center Theater, Enjoy free popcorn and a new movie featuring girls from all over the world struggling against cultural and societal barriers. Sponsored by OIE and the Women’s Resource Center.
Friday (November 21)
  • Featured Speaker, Ömer Taşpınar: 10-11:30am, Instructional Center, Room 105, Lecture of current events in the Middle East followed by a panel discussion. www.brookings.edu/experts/taspinaro
  • Language Cafe: noon-2pm, O’Keefe Lawn, Come interact with students from all over the globe and paractice your language skills with the Language Institute students. 
  • Scrum Time, Fun Time - Learn to Play Rugby!: 2-4pm, Stamps Turf Field, Come out and meet the Georgia Tech men's and women's rugby teams and get an overview of one of the most popular games in the world! Feel free to just watch or wear athletic clothes and join in!
  • Japan Info Session: 5-6pm, Swan Lobby, Learn about opportunities in Japan for GT students. Hosted by the Dept of Modern Languages Japanese Department. 
  • Cure Your Cravings: 5-7pm, Klaus Atrium, Celebrate Chinese culture with restaurant-catered cuisine and performances-- Dinner is 5$-Buy your tickets at www.chinacare.gatech.edu.
  • Tae Kwon Do: 5:30-6:30pm, Studio A, Campus Recreation Center. Come to a free class (fee-paying students only) for an introduction class in the Korean martial art of Taekwondo.
