Women, Science, and Technology Spring Vacancies

The Georgia Tech Center for Women, Science, and Technology (WST) seeks women leaders to join the spring 2015 Women, Science, and Technology Learning Community. Georgia Tech's first living-learning community (founded fall 2000), the WST Learning Community invites female undergraduates in any major to apply for rooms in Stein House and Goldin House (4th St. A & B). A few WST Learning Community residents are moving out to go on coop or study abroad programs, so there will be spring 2015 openings.

WST will hold an open house in Stein on Tuesday, November 18, 2015, from 5:30-6:30pm. Students will offer tours of the residence halls. Students interested in moving to the WST Learning Community after fall term should contact me: carol.colatrella@lmc.gatech.edu

Here are more details:

The WST Learning Community enhances the academic and professional development of Georgia Tech undergraduates by creating networks for students and for student and faculty interaction. WST Learning Community residents enjoy academic and career success and are active student leaders on campus and off. Many WST alumnae pursue careers in business, engineering, science, or computing after graduation and a significant number go on to graduate school or to study and work in medicine or law.

A WST alumna, who served as a medical resident in radiology at Emory, acknowledges “Academically, [WST] provided a community where I finally fit in. The absolute positive impact that this program still provides me is mentors and guidance through this fantastic jungle of our career world. This established access to experts across fields is what facilitates my advancement when it is unclear how to professionally take the most suitable next steps forward.” A WST alumna, who received a graduate degree in optometry from the University of California at Berkeley, agrees: "The WST program enabled me to broaden my college experience and opened the door to many opportunities that I'm not sure I would have had otherwise. I would highly recommend this program to anyone considering it."

Modeled on residence hall programs for women in science and engineering, the WST Learning Community offers dinners, lunches, receptions, lectures, and other activities addressing academic and career planning. A recent resident asserts "Being a part of the WST program has enabled and encouraged me to apply the knowledge and skills that I have learned at Georgia Tech in many ways. Through the programs and speakers, I have been given the opportunity to not only learn more about myself but also the opportunity to further the cause through research and philanthropic events. "

WST pairs interested students with faculty mentors, offers volunteer service for residents with a local middle school girls' science club, and provides paid undergraduate research opportunities for students working with Georgia Tech faculty members. Residence hall activities also include study sessions, social events, arts and crafts projects, and community planning meetings.

The Think Big fee for living in the WST Learning Community is $150 per term. Activities include monthly dinners and biweekly lunches with GT faculty, staff, and administrators, research partnerships, service opportunities, and faculty mentoring.
