First year students Kaley Parchinksi and Sara Dada visited with Dr. Robert Wirtz of the CDC on March 24. Kaley and Sara are conducting research as a team with Professor Tone on the nature of yellow fever virus's extrinsic incubation in the AĆ«des aegypti mosquito, the most common vector for yellow fever. As part of their research, they interviewed Dr. Wirtz, who is Chief of the Entomology Branch of the CDC. They also received a tour of the CDC insectary, one of the largest in the world. The insectary houses an impressive array of insects used by researchers working on malaria, arboviruses, and other zoonotics. Dr. Tone and the students viewed the laboratories and collections, including the infamous Reduviidae, or kissing bugs, which spread Chagas disease.
