Summer 2014 Pre-Teaching Action Research Internship @ Centennial Place Academy

The Pre-Teaching Action Research Internship @ Centennial Place Academy (CPA) provides Georgia Tech undergraduate students with the opportunity to spend ten weeks during the summer term interning at Centennial Place Academy in Atlanta. Centennial Place Academy, formerly Centennial Place Elementary School, is a newly converted K-8 charter school in the Atlanta Public Schools (APS) system that has a strong partnership with Georgia Tech (Tech). CPA will be Tech’s premiere lab-school for the development of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and project-based inquiry learning (PBIL) in K-12 education. The Georgia Tech Pre-Teaching program and CPA are offering two internship opportunities for Tech students wishing to explore teaching as a possible career choice.

Internship Description

The Pre-Teaching Action Research Internship @ Centennial Place Academy interns will work with the CPA leadership team and a small group of rising sixth grade students to research and construct the critical components needed to create a PBIL environment with a STEM focus. The emphasis of the internships will be on action research regarding the processes needed to enhance the school culture and outline specific project-based inquiry learning expectations. Action research is a disciplined process of inquiry conducted by and for those taking the action. The primary reason for engaging in action research is to help educators become more effective in the classroom. Action research is empowering and always relevant to the participants. Interns at CPA will have the opportunity to:

• research PBIL
• research STEM Education
• provide students with PBIL and STEM experiences
• work with rising 6th graders on the development of school norms and shared expectations
• improve students’ attitudes about PBIL & STEM education and its applications
• lead small group instruction and research projects as deemed appropriate
• assist in the goal of increasing student understanding and its impact on the school culture
• assist in the goal of increasing student understanding of curriculum development
• produce concrete deliverables that CPA can utilize in its execution of PBIL and STEM
• lead a Science Intersession class under the supervision of a teacher

Work Schedule and Stipend

Interns will generally work 30 hours a week for ten weeks, Monday – Friday. Each intern will discuss his/her particular schedule with the principal. Each intern will be paid $10/hour for a total of 300 hours and $3,000. No pay is available for overtime. The schedule is as follows:

June 4 – 6, June 9 – 13, June 16 – 20, June 23 – 27, June 30 – July 3*, July 14 – 18, July 21 – 25,

July 28 – August 1, August 4 – 8, and August 11 -15**

*vacation: July 4 – July 11 **fall term 2014 starts August 18

Funding and Credit Hours

An internship qualifies for nine internship credit hours through the Georgia Tech Center for Career Discovery and Development (C2D2) (formerly Division of Professional Practice -DoPP). The C2D2 also provides the stipend.

Responsibilities

Interns will abide by all policies set forth by Atlanta Public Schools, Centennial Place Academy, and Georgia Tech. The interns will be responsible for carrying out all responsibilities assigned during the internship. Interns are responsible for submitting the proper paperwork to DoPP in order to insure payment. Interns are also responsible for following all necessary procedures for registration of the internship. Information is available upon acceptance of a position.

Location and Transportation

Centennial Place Academy is less than five minutes from Tech Tower at 531 Luckie Street NW, Atlanta 30313. Interns can walk, ride a bike or drive.

Eligibility

Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be in good academic standing. There is no credit hour minimum requirement. Applicants must consult with their academic advisor as well as their financial aid advisor (if applicable) to insure the internship does not conflict with graduation goals or academic credit hour policies. Applying for an internship is not a guarantee of an interview. Interviews will be at Centennial Place Academy the week of April 14th.
