The Richard B. Russell Library, a political archives at the
University of Georgia, serves as a center for research and study of modern
American politics and policymaking. With particular emphasis on the role of
Georgia and the U. S. Congress, current collection development and programming
initiatives focus on the dynamic relationship of politics, policy, and culture
-generated wherever public interest intersects with government.
The work schedule is between 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday,
including an hour-long unpaid lunch break each day, for a period of ten weeks
between May and August.

Project Description:
This project will make the personal papers of Powell Moore available
for research. Moore’s papers (46 linear feet) document his career of over four
decades in government, serving as press secretary for Senator Richard B.
Russell, as legislative aide in the Nixon, Ford and Reagan administrations,
posts in the Departments of Defense, Justice and State, and other positions.
As part of the Russell Library’s Arrangement &
Description unit, the intern will be responsible for all aspects of processing
the Moore Papers, including processing planning, appraisal and arrangement.
Using Archivists’ Toolkit, the intern will create a DACS-compliant EAD finding
aid that will be made available online through the Russell Library’s finding
aids database. The intern will gain supervisory experience by directing the
work of one of the Russell’s student assistants. In addition, the intern will document
the internship and promote the collection by contributing to the Russell
Library blog. The intern will assist the Electronic Records Archivist with
processing any electronic records associated with the papers. The intern will
also have the opportunity to engage with the Russell’s other units, Access
& Outreach and Oral History & Media.
Required
Qualifications:
Candidates should be enrolled in,
or a recent graduate of, a
graduate program pursuing a degree in library science, archival studies, history,
public history, museum studies or other related field. Candidates should have a
strong interest in the archival profession and some experience with using
primary sources for research and writing. Above all, we are looking for an
enthusiastic self-starter who can work independently to complete project goals.

with three references, and a writing sample. The cover letter should provide a
detailed description of the applicant’s experience and expectations for an
internship. The writing sample should demonstrate the applicant’s ability to
communicate clearly and concisely.
