Partners in Interactive Education (PIE) Tutoring is a volunteering opportunity for Georgia Tech students interested in tutoring high school students (16-18 years old) who are at risk of failing standardized testing at the West End Academy.
  • Event date(s): Tutoring takes place during the weekdays during the spring 2014 semester.
  • Event time(s): Tutoring takes place during the school day: 9am-3:30pm.
  • What volunteers will do: Volunteers will carpool to the West End Academy in order to provide in-classroom tutoring support to high school students studying towards their high school degrees. The West End Academy is a non-traditional program addressing the needs of at risk students, who may or may not be succeeding in the regular school environment.
  • Skills needed: Volunteers should understand and be able to explain high school level mathematics (algebra, precalculus, trigonometry). Volunteers will be expected to work with students in need of additional academic support and with school faculty/staff in order to provide the best support possible.
  • Training provided: Brief orientation provided. In addition, school faculty and PIE chairperson can provide support at any time.
  • Numbers of hours/days per week: Minimum of one hour per week not including travel time (trip is ~15 minutes one way).
  • Length of commitment: Ideally, volunteers should be able to commit one semester minimum.
  • Transportation needed: Yes. If volunteer cannot provide his/her own transportation (school is 7 mile drive from campus), then carpooling with other tutors can be arranged.
  • Compensation: None.
