New Pre-Teaching Course Offerings

The Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL) and the Pre-Teaching program in conjunction with the History, Technology, and Society (HTS) department will be offering new courses on education starting in spring of 2014. All courses are three credit hour special topics courses. Students should consult their academic advisor regarding academic credit within specific majors.

Phase 1 registration for spring 2014: October 28 – November 15, 2013

Phase 2 registration for spring 2014: January 2 –January 10, 2014

First day of classes for spring 2014: Monday, January 6, 2014

The new Pre-Teaching courses through CETL as of spring 2014 and beyond will be:
CETL 4803 ISS: Contemporary and Critical Issues in Education T/R 8:05 – 9:25 Clough 323
Instructors: Belmonte and Whiting
This course is for any student considering becoming a K-12 educator, interested in education policy or who is simply wants to learn more about critical and contemporary issues of education. You will be learning about numerous issues that affect public education on a local, state, and national level. You will have the opportunity each class to discuss your thoughts, your views, and opinions. You will have fun and at the same time become more aware of the complex world of public education.

Undergraduate and graduate students may take the course. Permits required. Make a request for a permit here.

HTS 2803: Sociology of Education T/R 12:05 – 1:25 Location TBD 
Instructor: GordonThis course is designed to provide students interested in P-12 (K-12) teaching careers with fundamental knowledge about the influence of diversity on the teaching and learning process. Examination of self and other is integral to the successful completion of the course.
Undergraduate and graduate students may take the course. Undergraduates do not need a permit. Permits required for graduate students only. Make a request for a graduate student permit here.

CETL 4803 PSY: Exploring Teaching and Learning (Educational Psychology) T/R 8:05 – 9:25 Clough 325
Instructor: Noyes
Exploring Teaching and Learning I applies the basic principles of child and adolescent development to the study of teaching and learning. By exploring research across the disciplines of both psychology and education, students gain a rich understanding of the dynamic nature of the classroom and the foundations of a professional knowledge base regarding the physical, social, and cognitive developmental influences on student learning. This course also explores individual learner characteristics and the necessity for differentiating instruction based on student traits. 

(This course will cover the material previously covered in CETL 4001 and CETL 4803 PR. Students who have taken CETL 4001 already cannot register for this course and should instead register for CETL 4803PR.)

CETL 4803 PR (Principles of Learning and Teaching II) Thursday 2:05 – 3:25 Howey S104Instructor: Anderson
This course is a continuation of CETL 4001. It focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary for effective classroom instruction and management including: educational psychology, instructional design, and delivery techniques. Through the use of case studies, discussion, individual research, and presentations the students will demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge needed to combine all aspects of teaching and learning. As a part of the course work for this class, students must complete a field experience. In addition to the one hour of class time, this course requires 3.0 hours in schools per week. CETL 4001 is the prerequisite for this course.
Prerequisite: CETL 4803PR will be offered one more time in the spring of 2014 to allow students currently in CETL 4001 or have taken CETL 4001 to continue the sequence. Only students who have taken CETL 4001 may register for CETL 4803PR. CETL 4001 will not be offered after this semester (Fall 2013).
