Intro to Spanish Changes

Posted by Admin On 1:55:00 PM
The School of Modern Languages is announcing a change to the way first-year SPAN courses are offered, beginning Fall 2013.  SPAN 1001 and 1002 will now be offered via an online format only beginning Fall: 1001 courses in Fall semesters, and 1002 courses during Spring semesters. These courses will be offered asynchronously, meaning that students will access course resources and complete course assignments and assessments completely online. There will be a small number of proficiency activities that will need to be completed via an on-campus meeting with the course instructor.

Students wishing to take 1001 and 1002 in the traditional in-class setting are encouraged to do so during Summer semesters, with 1001s being offered in the Early sessions and 1002s being offered in the Late sessions; this allows students to complete whole sequence in one complete summer.

The School wishes to emphasize the SPAN 1001 is open only to students who have never studied Spanish formally before; no native speakers may take the course; students who have taken Spanish in middle or high school must take the online placement test, found at http://www.modlangs.gatech.edu/student-resources/placement-tests, in order to determine where to begin in the Spanish program at GT. SPAN 1001 is the pre-requisite for taking SPAN 1002.

SPAN 1101-1102, intended for learners with limited exposure to Spanish study, will continue to be offered, but primarily in Summer sessions (1101 in Early sessions, 1102 in Late sessions), until it too is converted to an online format.

In order to ease this transition to online formats, limited on-campus sections of SPAN 1002 and 1102 will be offered to help students complete the sequence they have begun.
