A position with Work For Progress as a Field Organizer is available for graduating seniors.
Work for Progress was started by a group of committed activists in the early part of 2008, to help activist- minded jobseekers connect with progressive campaigns and organizations.
Priority Campaign: Fair Share’s Middle Class Tax Cuts First Campaign
Work for Progress Field Organizers will start in early 2013 by partnering with Fair Share on the Middle Class Tax Cuts First campaign. The middle class is being squeezed by widespread job losses, rising bills and smaller paychecks — and that’s crippling the recovery and growth of our economy. To make matters worse, on Jan. 1, taxes on middle-class families are set to go up by an average of $1,600. America needs to strengthen its middle class, not weaken it by raising our taxes. There is no excuse for Congress to delay — both Democrats and Republicans support extending these tax cuts. Unfortunately, the Republican leadership is holding the middle class hostage in order to force through another tax break for millionaires. Fair Share is calling on Congress to stop playing games with middle class families and pass a simple extension of the tax cuts for 98% of Americans, and end the tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans.
Fair Share works to provide every American with a fair shot at a good job, a secure future and a strong voice in our democracy. But powerful entrenched interests are gaming the system to their benefit while denying everyone else a fair shot. The public needs to stand up to the 1% and their allies in Congress that block progress at every turn. Through door-to-door canvassing and grassroots lobbying, Fair Share presses local and national government to do its job and defend working families against the privileged and the powerful.
Responsibilities
As a Field Organizer, you will build the public and political support we need to win on a number of progressive causes – whether it’s protecting the middle class and rebuilding America’s economy, preserving the environment, ensuring a clean energy future, increasing consumer protections, or strengthening democracy. As a Work for Progress Organizer you will be assigned to several urgent campaigns during the year throughout the country. You will be matched with a Work for Progress client and help that organization win their campaign.
Field organizers will:
• Recruit local organizations to join the campaign and take action.
• Build an email activist network of constituents in the district.
• Hold news conferences with experts, coalition partners, and constituents, to deliver your
message.
• Organize events such as a town hall meeting and other public events to lift up constituents’
voices and hold elected leaders accountable.
• Lobby lawmakers directly, learning to make a convincing case for our policy goals.
• Recruit, train and manage volunteers and activists.
• Run citizen outreach campaigns: you’ll build the power of your organization, learning to
fundraise, manage staff and educate the public.
• Recruit full time staff into organizer positions
Qualifications
We’re seeking smart, creative college graduates who are passionate about creating change. Experience with community and/or political organizing is helpful but not required. Organizers need to be flexible to be placed in a number of different locations through the year
Training
Work for Progress works with a variety of national and state-based organizations. As a member of our team you’ll have the opportunity to work with, and learn from, our national staff and staff from other states. You’ll gain skills in political organizing, advocacy and fundraising and learn how to build powerful, statewide organizations.
You’ll attend an initial classroom training where you will learn and practice various organizing skills, get briefed on specific issues, and gain an understanding of different organizing theories. You will be placed into your assignment straight out of training and be expected to hit the ground running
