Pre-Teach Volunteers at Atlanta Girls' School

Posted by Admin On 9:31:00 AM
Founded in 2000, the Atlanta Girls’ School (AGS) is a private, all-girls college preparatory school serving grades 6-12. The school is currently looking for volunteers to work with groups of 1-4 students at time in a variety of subjects.

Location: AGS is located just a short way from GA Tech at 3254 Northside Parkway NW Atlanta, GA 30327

Hours needed per week: Volunteers are asked to commit to at least 1 hour of tutorial time per week for a semester at a time; volunteers are welcome to volunteer more, as their schedules allow.

Number of students needing tutoring: Volunteers will work with 1-4 students at a time

Subjects: Most students need help in math or science, but other subject help is also needed. Tutors may ask to work with studentsonly in those subject areas that they, the volunteers, are comfortable with. (i.e. you won't be asked to tutor in English or Spanish if you wish to only help with math and science).

Age group and grade
: The Learning Lab is open to all students, grades 6 - 12/ages 12-18. However, the majority of students who use the lab are in middle school or are in grades 9th/10th. Students can sign up for a one-time session with a tutor or, more likely, sign up for ongoing tutorial sessions so tutors typically will get to know the girls they work with overtime.

When during the week (specific days and times): The Learning Lab is open from 3 - 4 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; on Fridays, it is open from 7:45 to 8:45 am. Volunteers are needed to staff the Lab for a full hour during any of these times.

How long of a commitment: minimum of 1 hour per week for at least 1 semester; a commitment for the entire school year is preferred but not required. We do not expect students to volunteer during GA Tech breaks.
Transportation needed/available: transportation needed carpooling is encouraged

Compensation: This is a volunteer opportunity only. However, AGS offers all volunteers the chance to observe in any of the classes and build working relationships with the teachers. AGS has had volunteers do some student teaching (if they desire to do so). There are also sometimes have paid coaching opportunities available to volunteers

How to apply: Contact Marisa Shubert via e-mail at mshubert@atlantagirlsschool.org or by phone at (404) 845-0900 ext. 217 (about volunteering or coaching opportunities)

All volunteers will be asked to undergo a background check and drug screening before they begin volunteering and working with our students one-on-one; AGS covers all costs of these screens -- there is no expense to the volunteers and it typically takes 2 weeks for approval once all paperwork is completed. Ms. Shubert will conduct a brief tour of the school and explanation of the volunteer responsibilities with all volunteers prior to their beginning work.
