The Writing and Communication Program at The Georgia Institute of Technology presents
Tech Gets Medieval:

How Medieval and Early Modern Technology Can Teach the PastTuesday, November 13, 2012, 12:00-4:30 pm

This symposium will foreground the ways in which knowledge of history informs
technological development today and will allow faculty from different programs and
schools to collaborate and discuss pedagogical methodologies used to effectively
deliver and contextualize historical content. To many, “medieval technology” seems
a misnomer. However, technological advances and refinements in the medieval and
early modern periods (roughly 500-1700 CE) profoundly advanced civilization in myriad
ways, ranging from (but not limited to) food production, construction, transportation,
clothing, and sanitation to warfare, defense, communication, entertainment, and
navigation. Because the Georgia Institute of Technology is uniquely situated to explore
the technological revolutions that inform the base of its curriculum, this symposium
invites Georgia Tech faculty to explicate their interests in any aspect of medieval
or early modern technology and industry (including topics associated with technical
communication) and to illustrate the pedagogical strategies used to convey these
interests and their modern relevance to students.

The symposium will feature a mix of presentations (limited to 15 minutes) and panel
discussions, where participants will have 10 minutes each to address two to three
specific questions about their methodology for teaching the past. We invite interested
faculty to submit an abstract (200-300 words) outlining a topic you would be interested
in presenting at the symposium. The presentations can focus on either content
(medieval or early modern technology) or pedagogy, but we ask you to include some
consideration of both issues. In addition, please include your preference about being
part of a panel discussion or giving a more formal presentation.

Deadline for submission of abstract: September 28, 2012 Please send your abstract to:
