Optional GT Advanced Placement Mathematics Examinations for New Summer
and Fall 2012 Freshmen

Tenatatively at room 249, Skiles General Classroom Building
Friday August 17, 2012
1 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Application form available. Please read till the bottom of the page
before you apply.

An incoming freshman with College Board AP Calculus credit, International Baccalaureate (IB) Mathematics credit, French Baccalaureate Mathematics credit, University of Cambridge Mathematics credit, Edexcel Mathematics credit or Scottish Qualification Certificates credit may be awarded credit for MATH 1501, Calculus I (see the AP credit chart). A student may also receive MATH 1501 transfer credit if he or she made at least a C in a Calculus I class at a college before attending Georgia Tech. The School of Mathematics will offer optional GT advanced placement  mathematics examinations to incoming freshmen who wish to test out of MATH 1113 (Precalculus), MATH 1501 (Calculus I) or MATH 1502 (Calculus II). Please note that the 1501 exam is different from the College Board AP exams. The exam for MATH 1113 may have both multiple choice and free-response questions. Both MATH 1501 and MATH 1502 exams are free-response exams (no multiple-choice problems). The exams will be given at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012 in the Skiles General Classroom Building. Please check this webpage in August for the exam room information, the tentative classroom is Skiles 249.

The GT Advanced Placement exam for MATH 1113 is for students who wish to
test out of Precalculus and register in MATH 1501, MATH 1711 or MATH 1712.

If you already have GT credit for MATH 1501 from one of the options
listed in the first paragraph, you do not have to take the optional GT
Advanced Placement exam for MATH 1501. You may elect to take the
optional GT Advanced Placement exam for MATH 1502. Please read the
description below to determine whether you are qualified to test out of
MATH 1502.

Optional GT Advanced Placement MATH 1113 Exam (2hrs, calculators are
allowed but not required):

The MATH 1113 exam is open to any student with mathematics SAT score of
less than 600. If the student passes the exam, he/she will be allowed to
register for MATH 1501, or MATH 1711 or MATH 1712. No academic credit is
granted for passing this precalculus exam. Consult the MATH 1113
syllabus page.

Optional GT Advanced Placement MATH 1501 Exam (2 hours, calculators are
allowed but not required):

MATH 1501 exam is open to any student with a mathematics SAT score of
600 or higher. If a student passes the MATH 1501 exam, he/she will be
given credit for MATH 1501 and will be allowed to register for MATH 1502.

Optional GT Advanced Placement MATH 1502 Exam (2 hours, calculators are
allowed but not required):

MATH 1502 exam is open to any student who has credit for MATH 1501 (see
the AP credit chart). If a student passes the MATH 1502 exam, he/she
will be given credit for MATH 1502 and will be allowed to register for
either MATH 2401 or MATH 2605 depending on his/her major or MATH 2403..

If a student took AP Calculus in high school but did not take Linear
Algebra, he/she should not take the MATH 1502 placement exam. Linear algebra
is a MAJOR part of Calculus II.
