Background:
The first record of a Take Back the Night event in the United States was in 1975 in Philadelphia. Citizens of Philadelphia rallied together after the murder of young woman who was stabbed by a stranger a block from her home while walking alone. Over the last 30 years in the United States, Take Back the Night has focused on eliminating sexual violence in all forms, and thousands of colleges, universities, women’s centers, and rape crisis centers have sponsored events all over the country.
Take Back the Night (TBtN) at Georgia Tech is held annually during March, in conjunction with Women’s Awareness Month (WAM). WAM is a month of programming to increase awareness of women’s issues at Georgia Tech. This year will be the 17th TBtN at GT. The event continues to grow and last year had over 1,000 attendees. TBtN is an evening to raise awareness and educate the GT community about sexual violence. The night includes survivors' stories, speakers, and a candle lighting ceremony and is an integral part of Georgia Tech’s sexual violence prevention initiative.
