On Friday, April 22, 2016, the School of History and Sociology at Georgia Tech is hosting a day-long symposium that will feature a roundtable discussion composed of leading historians and sociologists, a series of breakout sessions led by those experts, a panel marking the 20th anniversary of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and a reception. The Student Honors Celebration recognizes students who have achieved academic and scholastic excellence in their programs of study at Georgia Tech. All student award recipients and their guests are invited to attend this celebration. An RSVP is required to attend this event.

Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the College gathered to celebrate the end of the year at the Spring Faculty and Staff Luncheon on Tuesday, April 19.

Dean Jacqueline Royster led the program and recognized the accomplishments of the College throughout the year.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy is currently accepting applications for its Fall Policy Internship Program. The application deadline is June 17, 2016. Students who are U.S. citizens and who will be enrolled in, or have just graduated from, an academic program should feel free to apply.

Registration is open for the Summer Online Undergraduate Program (SOUP.) With online summer courses, students can get ahead, stay on track with your hours, or get into classes that normally fill up. Similar to Tech courses taught on campus, online courses are semester-based, and perfect for Georgia Tech students who will be working at an internship, co-op, or unable to be on campus during the summer.


Students participating in SOUP courses, are unable to take classes on the Atlanta campus, any other campus or through the study abroad program.

Students can go to https://pe.gatech.edu/summer-classes to see which courses will be offered and start the process to sign up for a SOUP class.

Undergraduate research at Tech will be showcased on Tuesday, April 19th (tomorrow) at the 11th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium http://urop.gatech.edu/2016-symposium in the Student Center Ballroom and surrounding rooms. Approximately 200 students will present their work on medical advances in multiple fields, sustainable building design, regeneration, even a wristband that digitizes handwriting on 2D surfaces, plus much, much more! Over 160 presentations with reception to follow (presentations 1-4:30pm | reception 4:30-6pm). The full symposium program is online here.

IMAX EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) is seeking a marketing intern for their London office for the Fall 2016 semester. This internship is unpaid, so all expenses will need to be covered by the intern. David Hounshell, one of the leading historians of technology and business historians in the U.S., will be speaking at GT on Monday afternoon at 4:00 on the history of R&D. His talk titled "What Led to the Rise of Industrial Research in America, Why Did It Once Flourish, and What Led to Its Decline?" will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the GTMI Auditorium.

This program was developed to provide hands-on experience and cultivate such skills.

In addition to the White House Internship Program being available to young leaders who are at least 18 years old, the D.C. Scholars Program is a part-time internship opportunity for young leaders in public and charter high schools within the District of Columbia.

The Homer Rice Award recognizes an HSOC graduate student who, through volunteerism, has fostered a sense of community in the School of History and Sociology, as well as broader communities. Named in honor of Dr. Homer Rice, Georgia Tech’s former athletic director, the award offers a modest monetary stipend as well as recognition on the HSOC award wall in the Old CE Building.

Five members of the Georgia Tech-based Atlanta area Working Group on Race and Racism in Contemporary Biomedicine including HSOC's own Dr. Jennifer Singh attended a conference called “The Politics of Health in the U.S. South” at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 17 - 18, 2016. The two-day conference was comprised of faculty, graduate students, activists, and policy makers from around the region and the country.

Please join us for Georgia Tech's 22nd annual Take Back the Night, a candlelight vigil dedicated to honoring survivors of sexual violence, including rape and sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Every year, we invite Georgia Tech community members to share their stories of their experience with sexual or relationship violence, either through anonymous submission or by reading it at Take Back the Night. This powerful event is focused on supporting and elevating the voices of survivors, and educating our community about these issues.

Sexual violence is an issue that can impact anyone. As long as sexual violence impacts one person on our campus, it impacts all of us. We believe that one of the key steps to ending sexual and relationship violence is believing survivors and creating spaces to allow survivors to share their stories, whether they happened recently or years ago. The courage and strength in sharing their stories will help other survivors know that they are not alone, and that we do not tolerate sexual violence or let it go silently into the night.

There will be counselors and other resources available at the event.

This event is part Sexual Assault Awareness Month and is hosted by the VOICE initiative, PAUSE student organization, the Women's Resource Center, and the Office of Health Promotion. Learn more about Take Back the Night and our upcoming Teal Ribbon Day of Action on April 14 at www.voice.gatech.edu.

The GT Fellowships Office in coordination with the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs is hosting an information session on the Marshall Scholarship opportunity. A Grand Challenges team at Georgia Tech called Food Fighters has been working for almost two years now on the problem space of food insecurity on college campuses.

They are conducting an IRB research study to understand underlying reasons why food insecure students do not seek assistance, and are trying to reach students all over campus.
