Changes to Core Curriculum

On March 9, 2016 the Board of Regents approved a revision to Board of Regents policies related to the Core Curriculum.

Effective immediately 

1. Institutions will not be required to identify or track overlay requirements related to US Perspectives, Global Perspectives, and Critical Thinking.


2. Students will not be required to complete the overlay requirements from this point forward.

3. Students who are scheduled to graduate this semester and who have not completed the overlays may graduate without fulfilling this requirement.

HTS 3823: Special Topics Course - Health Inequality

This course is designed to investigate social conditions such as poverty, social isolation, and segregation as well as ascribed characteristics of gender and race that are predictive of a battery of contemporary chronic diseases and causes of premature death. Topics will cover health inequalities in the U.S., selective global perspectives, and policy efforts to eliminate health inequalities. Intended to be far more than a simple lecture course, the class will provide students with numerous opportunities to deeply engage with the course material through response memos, small group discussions, conversations with experts on course topics, and an independent (group) research project. This course qualifies as an elective for the Health, Medicine and Society (HMS) Minor in the School of History and Sociology.

The Society of Georgia Archivists (SGA) was established in 1969 to foster a community of archivists, librarians, historians, educators, and museum and historical agency personnel in the state of Georgia and the southeast. SGA fosters and supports the archival community by advocating for professionals, collections, and repositories; encouraging diversity in the field; promoting education and professional development; and advancing scholarly research and innovation through the publication of our journal, Provenance.




SGA is dedicated to creating opportunities for students to learn more about the field of archives by offering educational events, networking, and career development activities. Membership in SGA also provides a solid connection to information about current archival and historical trends and issues as well as opportunities to associate with and learn from leading individuals in the field.


Membership for full-time students is only $10 annually. Benefits of membership include discounted annual meeting and workshop fees, access to the SGA listserv and online job postings, SGA's Mentoring Program, as well as subscriptions to the SGA publications Provenance and the SGA Newsletter.

The "Comfort Women" Debate

While the plight of the so-called “comfort women” has long been seen as a Korean issue, it is simultaneously a broader matter concerning historical justice, human rights, and peace in East Asia. Three experts share information on how the "comfort women’s" long struggle for justice has been received by the public in Korea, China, and Japan. Participants will theorize possible resolutions that could honor the victims, promote the value of human rights, and facilitate cooperation among the three countries.

A Symposium at the National Archives at Atlanta
Saturday, September 17, 2016


The 2016 National Archives at Atlanta’s annual scholarly symposium, Ethics, Epidemics, and Education: Public Health and the Federal Governmentwill be held Saturday, September 17, 2016. This event culminates a year-long effort to promote research in the National Archives at Atlanta’s estimated 5,000 cubic feet of records that document the Federal Government’s historic involvement in public health. These historic resources are ripe for new scholarship and discovery. The symposium program committee welcomes proposals for presentations from the universities and colleges across the Southeast and beyond.

Scholars in graduate programs and above are encouraged to submit proposals on one of the many possible topics that can be generated from these holdings.

Duke MA in Bioethics & Science Policy

The Duke MA in Bioethics & Science Policy invites students to address these questions and many more. The program is the only one in the US that combines bioethics and science policy to truly prepare students to address the societal impact of advances in the biosciences, medicine, and technology.

Students explore cutting-edge developments in such fields as genomics and neuroscience and how scientific advances impact law and policy. Each student works with a mentor throughout the program to create an individualized academic experience.

Summer Teach-In

The International Human Trafficking Institute (IHTI) invites students and youth activists to Atlanta, the think tank of the American Civil Rights Movement, for a Summer Teach-In, on how to plan, strategize, and ignite an activist movement on campus.


IHTI will host a two-day session (July 22-23) at The Center for Civil and Human Rights designed for students who wish to organize their peers for social change engagement. While the focus is student engagement to end human trafficking, these strategies and principles may be applied toward addressing any social injustice.

Congressional Research Grants

DEADLINE: All proposals must be received no later than April 1, 2016.

The Dirksen Congressional Center invites applications for grants to fund research on congressional leadership and the U.S. Congress. The Center, named for the late Senate Minority Leader Everett M. Dirksen, is a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit research and educational organization devoted to the study of Congress. Since 1978, the Congressional Research Grants program has invested more than $998,026 to support over 451 projects.


Applications are accepted at any time, but the deadline is April 1 for the annual selections, which are announced in May.

The Center has allocated up to $50,000 in 2016 for grants with individual awards capped at $3,500.

Volunteers only need an hour or more of free time on Friday and will be asked to give tours, mingle with students, or bring students to class. 10-month Masters of Management Studies program at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management: 

In short, this program targets graduating seniors with liberal arts, science and/or math majors who would like to gain a foundation in business before jumping into the workforce. The program runs for 10-months on the Kellogg Chicago campus.

Gilman Scholarship Workshop

The Gilman International Scholarship aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergrads who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. On Thursday, March 10, the annual Career, Research, and Innovation Development Conference (CRIDC) poster competition took place in the Georgia Tech Student Center. At the conference, the winners of the fourth annual Ivan Allen College Graduate Student Paper Competition and Conference were announced during the conference’s awards ceremony. The paper conference increases in number every year and graduate students from a variety of programs within the College present research at the conference.




Each year, the winning papers are awarded significant prizes in the form of travel funds, which enable graduate students to present their work at professional conferences in their fields. The winners of this year’s paper competition were Jon Schmid (first prize), Yin Li (second prize), Sooa Lee, Mario Bianchini, and Renee Shelby (tied for third prize).

Wednesday March 16th is the last day to drop individual courses or withdraw from school with "W" grades in all courses and receive a refund. It is also the deadline for changing grade mode from pass/fail to letter grade or vice versa.

Solidarity Ignite is a nonprofit which brings students from across the country together to focus on social justice issues on their campuses and get trained in concrete organizing skills to advance these efforts.



They are leading Summer trainings/study abroad trips to the Dominican Republic, where students can meet with garment workers who sew Georgia Tech clothes and learn how universities are connected to global social justice movements. This year's Summer Immersion is August 3rd-17th. More information can be found on this page.

If you are a student working on projects (class related or personal) that address social or environmental problems in the community or around the globe this is a great opportunity to get mentoring, feedback, and prize money to move your idea to the next phase. It is also a great differentiator for your resume and a great way to expand your networks.

The Sports Shorts program is curated by Georgia Tech professor Gregory Zinman and features several brief sports-related films. Topics range from recreational drug use in sport to parody of sport celebrity to inspirational stories—and more. *Note: The schedule below may change slightly based upon film availability.

Students are critical in building an inclusive community on-campus. This highly interactive and engaging training will expand students’ skills regarding the concept and ideal of social justice – including terminology, definitions, and action planning. Participants will explore their own identifies and acknowledge systems which are barriers to social justice. This session is limited to 25 students.
