The "Comfort Women" Debate

Posted by Admin On 3:18:00 PM 0 comments
While the plight of the so-called “comfort women” has long been seen as a Korean issue, it is simultaneously a broader matter concerning historical justice, human rights, and peace in East Asia. Three experts share information on how the "comfort women’s" long struggle for justice has been received by the public in Korea, China, and Japan. Participants will theorize possible resolutions that could honor the victims, promote the value of human rights, and facilitate cooperation among the three countries.

Human Trafficking Symposium at Georgia Tech
Thursday, September 24, 8am to 12:30pm (ticketed lunch 12:30 to 1:30pm)
Student Success Center
According to the U.S. State Department, human trafficking is one of the greatest global human rights challenges of this century. Unfortunately, Atlanta's dominance as a transportation hub has made it one of the busiest centers of this multi-billion dollar slave-trading business. The Human Trafficking Symposium, presented by Skål International Atlanta in partnership with One Voice and the Women’s Resource Center at Georgia Institute of Technology on Sept. 24, 2015 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m., will focus on what’s being done globally and locally to stop human trafficking.

The event, which will convene in Georgia Tech’s Bill Moore Student Success Center’s Presidential Suite, is free and open to the public, but registration is required in advance at http://www.skalatlanta.org/human-trafficking-rsvp.html. Participants are invited to stay for an interactive roundtable luncheon from 12:30-1:30 p.m. (cost: $40), during which they’ll discuss the issues, challenges and ideas presented during the symposium and propose potential solutions and next-steps. Findings from the luncheon will be compiled as a white paper and distributed to all symposium attendees in October.

The symposium is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to stay for the interactive roundtable luncheon to discuss the challenges, opportunities and next steps that need to be taken ($40).

The Breman Museum’s last Bearing Witness of the year will feature an incredible speaker – Penina Bowman. She will speak on Sunday May 3 at 2PM. The event is free and open to the public.
Penina’s wedding dress is displayed in our Holocaust Gallery and is a story that is beloved by many.

Former NAACP Chair to Give MLK Lecture

Each January, the Georgia Tech community comes together to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and rededicate itself to his vision.

This year, Julian Bond, social activist and former chairman of the board of the NAACP, will give the keynote address at Georgia Tech’s fourth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture, on Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

Volunteers needed for the 2015 Point-in-Time Homeless Count for the City of Atlanta on January 22, 2015:

Since homelessness impacts all groups, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, or gender, we are making a concerted effort to get the entire city involved in helping to eradicate it. We need your help! This is in part to fill federal requirements for homeless program funding, but also to gauge how current programs are doing.

This effort, sponsored by the Atlanta Continuum of Care and its partners (Pathways Community Network Institute, Kroger, Trader Joe's, and United Way) is one of the largest in Atlanta and we need over 400 volunteers! As a community of academics, let's lead the way in transforming our communities, in solidarity.

GT Martin Luther King Celebration

Georgia Tech Martin Luther King Celebration: Campuswide Student Celebration

2015 will mark the fifth annual Student Celebration, and the celebration attracts a diverse group of students. Students will gather to hear four energized student speakers who will participate in a highly selective application process; last year’s speakers received a $250 book award from Buzzfunds. In addition, several student organizations will provide entertainment e.g. spoken word, stepping, singing, dance, and various cultural celebrations. The event culminates with over 40 student organizations lighting a candle on behalf of Dr. King. At the reception, students stayed around for hours to congratulate the speakers and talk about the meaning of the holiday. Last year, the student committee provided an opportunity for students to reflect by posting their thoughts on white boards. The Student Celebration is hosted by Mr. & Ms. Georgia Tech.

Check out the flyer for all events honoring Dr. King.
