The URK is a great opportunity to present your research in a pecha kucha format. Presentations must be designed to emphasize the importance of your research rather than specific results. As such, your project does not need to be complete for you to present. Additionally, all presentations must be intelligible by an audience unfamiliar with your field.

Since printing its first volume in 2008, The Tower has progressed from a publication that simply binds together research articles to one that captures the stories and faces of undergraduate research across the Institute.

Pick up your copy of The Tower’s fifth edition at various locations around campus.

The journal, which publishes each semester, gives undergraduate researchers the opportunity to have their articles accepted to a peer-reviewed publication. The fifth edition includes work from the College of Engineering, College of Sciences, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and Scheller College of Business. It also highlights opportunities available through the Fellowships Office and provides insight into the Institute’s research strategy through interviews with Executive Vice President for Research Steve Cross and Integrated Sciences Curriculum Coordinator Jennifer Leavey.

Submissions to The Tower are accepted on a rolling basis and can be in the form of articles, dispatches, perspectives or synopses. The journal also continually accepts staff applications. More information on both can be found at gttower.org.

The Tower is now accepting submissions from all undergraduate majors of study in a variety of formats. The journal provides the opportunity for students to have their research published and participate in a peer review process. The deadline to submit is Friday, March 1.

The Tower, Undergraduate Research Journal is currently seeking an Assistant Business Manager to handle updating the facebook page, twitter and tumblr.  Additionally, you would be in charge of campus communications, including but not limited to: chalking, flyering, and distribution of journals (you might get to drive a $13,000 golf cart).

If selected for the position, you would be working for no more than 5-8 hours per week and would only required to attend a weekly Editorial Board meeting.  This is a great opportunity to build your resume, and there is the possibility of a stipend if you serve for the whole school year.

With the plethora of cutting-edge research being performed at the Institute, one group is trying to bring a new tradition to research presentations at Tech. 
The Tower undergraduate research journal will host its second Undergraduate Research Kaleidoscope (URK) Monday, April 25, at 6 p.m. in the Library East Commons, where researchers present in a fast-paced, visual format known as a pecha kucha (pee-CHAY coo-CHA).
“A pecha kucha is Japenese for ‘chit chat,’” said Michael Chen, editor-in-chief of The Tower. Each presentation is allowed to show exactly 20 slides for 20 seconds each; ideally, slides contain solely an image, no text. “The time constraints force researchers to drop the technical jargon and present the significance of their research to a broad audience.”
The format provides a casual forum for undergraduates to share their passion and interest in research and an additional opportunity to learn about the kinds of research being performed across campus.
“It’s exciting to see the human aspect behind research. We have a lot of fun watching presenters adapt the timing of their content on the fly,” Chen said. 
The event’s name refers to the many colorful reflections one sees when looking into a kaleidoscope, which Chen likens to the varied research projects carried out by undergraduates at Tech.
Tonight’s URK will include complimentary food for guests, provided by Tin Drum, and a $50 prize to the best student presenter. To see examples of pecha kucha presentations, visit gttower.org/watch.
The Tower collaborates with Charlie Bennett, who works in research, instruction and outreach in the library, as well as with Campus Services and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program for its URKs.
The Tower is also currently taking submissions for its next issue and has extended the deadline to Friday, May 13; students can learn more about the submission process at the journal’s recently redesigned website at gtower.org/submit. This is a fantastic opportunity for HTS students to have their research published! They are looking for a max of 3,000 words, so about 10 double spaced pages. The deadline is 11/19, but they have indicated to me that they would really like Ivan Allen College to be represented in the next edition, so they can be a bit flexible on the deadline. The Tower Undergraduate Research Journal is seeking submissions from HTS undergraduate researchers for next semester's issue. Our submission deadline for next semester's issue is Nov. 19th. We, at The Tower, encourage you to modify your previous research papers/final reports for submission to The Tower Undergraduate Research Journal so you can showcase your research to the Georgia Tech community and add a first author publication to your CV! You can submit at http://gttower.org/submit/.

We have modified our submissions guideline slightly to accommodate more fields of research (not yet reflected in our submission guideline on our website). For citation styles, we now accept Chicago and MLA styles on top of APA 6th. We strongly recommend that you use Endnote X4, freely available at software.oit.gatech.edu, to format your citations.

Finally, we do not strictly enforce copyright, as we are a student undergraduate research journal. We encourage our authors to use materials that they have published in our journal for articles in open, refereed literature.
