The City's Department of Watershed Management is recruiting for its summer internship program. Opportunities are available in a variety of areas, as described below; other duties may be assigned as needed.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Communications
Assist in writing press releases, videotaping, making sure printed materials are up to date, perform research, update the media contact list, assist with the youth summer program and work with youth of all ages.
Engineering
Collect data for technical/operational studies; perform routine tests and business process improvements; maintain inventory control system; and repair or replace equipment. Engineering or related majors preferred.
Financial Administration
Assist with the observation, testing and recording of the department's year-end inventory count. Some work is performed outdoors in warm/hot temperatures. Business Administration or related majors preferred.
Industrial Pretreatment
Enter laboratory data and Self Monitoring Report forms into the Pretreatment Industrial Management System and research compatible municipal programs for program upgrades. Natural and environmental sciences or related majors preferred.
Information Technology/Project Management
Assist with the management of a project utilizing the PMBOK methodology. Duties include providing support in the following areas: determining the scope of the project; gathering requirements from the customer; developing a project plan; implementing the project; and closing out the project. Information Technology, Industrial Engineering or related majors preferred.
Ordinance Revision
Provide support for the revision and adoption of the City's Subdivision Ordinance. Duties include maintaining documents and records; tracking text changes; preparing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and public outreach materials; scheduling and setup for public meetings and events; reviewing and revising text; and communicating with review team. City and Regional Planning, Public Policy, Environmental Science or related majors preferred.
Process Control
Provide support to Process Control staff and/or Engineers. Duties include assisting with report writing and monitoring of project progress; completing filing and other office-support duties; entering work order information into computer systems; researching control and instrumentation equipment and strategies; assisting in the development of schedules; contacting vendors; and checking for proper operation of sidewalk pressure monitoring boxes. Will use tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, multimeters and electronic tool sets. Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Electronics or related majors preferred.
Stormwater Management
Scan and process documents; enter data into databases; create hard copy files; and work with Site Development staff. Natural and environmental science or related majors preferred.
Water Conservation
Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators; assist with installing rain barrels; monitor Care & Conserve phone line; file documents; assist with pre- and post-installation toilet inspections; and collect rain barrel data. Requires some physical work, such as moving empty rain barrels and loading and unloading equipment. Will use hand-held and motorized screwdrivers and may use a cross-cut saw. Will utilize hand trucks for transporting supplies Liberal Arts, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture or related majors preferred.
Water Quality
Verify water sample locations on maps and computer; enter locations into an Excel file to be imported into a Geographic Information System (GIS) for future usage; and scan bench sheets, field sheets and reports into computer. Natural and environmental sciences or related majors preferred.
