The 2012 Allen Prize Symposium brings to the Georgia Tech community an opportunity to consider the grand health challenges facing our world. During a career spanning 60 years, Dr. William H. Foege has defined the world dialog, policies, and actions for global health founded on values of compassion and justice.  He devised the surveillance/containment vaccination strategy that led to the eradication of small pox worldwide in the 1970s and has held key leadership positions at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The Task Force for Global Health, which he co-founded, The Carter Center, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  He has been a vital and insistent advocate for a global health agenda encompassing disease eradication and control, child survival and development, injury prevention, population control, preventative medicine, and tobacco-related diseases.  He has championed seemingly impossible - and sometimes controversial - goals and his vision and work have saved the lives of millions and are bringing hope for the future to many millions more.
