HTS and UIAC students were sent an email today with some very important information on academic advising for summer and fall 2012 class registration.  Didn't receive the email?  Here's what to do:
  1. Check your spam/junk mail folder to make sure that the message did not go there.
  2. Make sure that you're on the HTS or UIAC advising listserv-- go to https://lists.gatech.edu to make sure that you belong to the appropriate listserv.  Not on it?  Email Dr. D'Unger.
  3. Click on the blue "Read More" button to read the full text of the email.Hi HTS and UIAC Students,

As some of you may know, I will be going on maternity leave in about 10 - 14 days.  Unfortunately, this means it will impact academic advising for Phase I of registration for summer and fall 2012.  Following is some important information for you to keep in mind over the next month, as you prepare to register for your classes.

The schedule of courses for both summer and fall 2012 will be available online March 14th.  On March 30th at 6.00 PM, time tickets will be issued, so you will know when your registration window opens.  Phase I of registration for both summer and fall is April 2 - 27.  (Note that you can always see these dates, as well as any other important dates and deadlines, on the registrar's calendar at http://registrar.gatech.edu/home/calendar.php).

I would encourage you to take a look at your degree checklist and make sure it is updated NOW.  Have questions?  Email me or schedule an appointment ASAP (www.advising.gatech.edu) so that you'll be prepared for registration when your time ticket opens.  Have paperwork that needs signatures?  Come and get them now!  You need to be proactive and prepared.

After March 14th, put together a few different schedules of classes, being flexible in case you don't get your first choice(s).  Also remember that there will be a Phase II registration for both summer and fall when major restrictions are lifted and there is a lot of movement in and out of classes.  For HTS majors, remember that HTS 2101 is only offered in the fall and that seminars (HTS 40XX, 4 credits) are offered in the fall and spring, but not in the summer.  Haven't taken HTS 2101?  You need to be in that class in the fall, so prioritize it in your schedule, as it won't be offered again until fall 2013.

If you are an Undecided Ivan Allen College major with last names A - L, then I am usually your advisor.  Dr. J.C. Reilly, the advisor in STaC who also advises UIAC students with last names M - Z will be serving as back up while I'm on leave.  If you don't get a timely response from me, please contact Dr. Reilly at jc.reilly@lcc.gatech.edu.  Dr. Reilly also uses the online scheduler at www.advising.gatech.edu.

If you are an HTS major, I will be advising primarily via email, though you will not be able to expect the usual quick turn-around time with my response, so please plan ahead.  When I can, I will also try to be available for instant message (IM) advising on the HTS blog at www.hts.gatech.edu/blog.  If feasible, I will also try to be in the office for a few days during the April 2 - 27 time period.  Please check the blog and/or the online advising scheduler periodically, as I'm unsure when those days will be and whether they will be appointment-only or strictly on a first-come, first-served walk-in basis.  In addition, Dr. Winders, the Director of Undergraduate Studies for HTS, will also be doing advising of HTS majors.  He will have limited advising appointments, which can be scheduled at www.advising.gatech.edu

WHETHER MAKING AN APPOINTMENT WITH ME, DR. WINDERS, OR DR. REILLY, PLEASE KNOW THAT WE WILL ALL BE ON VERY TIGHT SCHEDULES.  PLEASE SHOW UP AND BE ON TIME.  IF YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO KEEP AN APPOINTMENT THAT YOU'VE MADE, CANCEL IT VIA THE ONLINE SCHEDULER SO THAT WE KNOW THAT YOU'RE NOT COMING AND SO THAT ANOTHER STUDENT CAN TAKE THE TIME SLOT.  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

For those of you who intend to graduate in fall 2012, the Online Application for Graduation (OAG) is available May 21 - June 15 for free, and then from June 16 - 30 for a fee of $50.  I will have advising appointments available for you, and advising is MANDATORY with this new system, just as it was with the old paper degree petitions.

I hope to get through this time period as smoothly as possible, but it will take planning on your part.  Know the classes you need, know what's available, and use the HTS website, HTS blog, and registrar's website as resources.  Answers to many of the questions that you might have are already online on one of those sites.  I hope to be available in the office through March 9th (though can't guarantee that), so please schedule any needed appointments as soon as possible.

    Regards,
    Dr. D'Unger
