The conference will be from March 30th to April 1st. It is an annual undergraduate conference with participants in multiple disciplines from all the ACC schools. It will be hosted by Virginia Tech this year. I will be doing a poster presentation on my PURA funded research from last Summer. My research was about the obstacles to greater participation women face in higher education, concentrating on computer science and chemistry. It was limited to the US, and included information on k-12, undergraduate, graduate, and professional arenas where women have and continue to face obstacles.
The main ideas presented in my paper included the role and power of gender socialization, the role and power of gender role expectations and how these two phenomena permeate and skew higher education in gender specific ways. I conducted this project under Dr. Bauchspies direction, and I found the entire process very rewarding, gaining research experience and a mentor.
