The Sophomore EXCEL Cohort is an innovative academic support program for  sophomores  who are not meeting their own academic expectations. The EXCEL Cohort program provides participants personalized attention and customized success plans. Cohort members gain access to a network of comprehensive academic support services designed with their needs in mind including 1-to-1 Tutoring, Academic Coaching, workshops, and PLUS sessions.  More information is available at: http://www.successprograms.gatech.edu/academicsupport/plugins/content/index.php?id=91

Peer Led Undergraduate Study (PLUS) sessions will be offered in MATH 1501, 1502, 2401, and CHEM 1211. These structured sessions provide opportunities for students enrolled in difficult courses to study with peer leaders who have successfully completed the course (and earned an “A”). PLUS leaders are trained to facilitate peer help sessions, attend the course each day with the students, and meet with students several times each week. During these voluntary, structured, learning sessions PLUS leaders incorporate learning and study strategies while discussing course content presented during the regularly scheduled lecture class.  A few characteristics that separate PLUS from other forms of assistance are:
  • PLUS supports academically challenging  courses rather than “high-risk” students
  • All students enrolled in a PLUS-supported course are encouraged to attend PLUS--not just those struggling
  • PLUS starts with the first day of classes and continues to the end of the term and helps students understand “what to learn” and “how to learn” by fostering  transferable study skills
1-to-1 Tutoring is offered in many courses, with an emphasis on introductory freshman- and sophomore-level subjects. All of our tutors are accomplished undergraduate students who have taken the courses they tutor at Georgia Tech and have faculty recommendations. Our Tutoring appointments have been filling up, so please encourage your students to attend PLUS first (if it is available for the course in which they are seeking help).
