Today, Georgia Tech will mark Veterans Day with the Institute's signature sound.
Starting at 11:11 a.m., the campus steam whistle will sound for each of the United States' overseas military campaigns, plus one in remembrance of Sept. 11. The first blast will coincide with the armistice that ended World War I. Successive blasts will honor the service personnel from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, the Iraq War and Operation Enduring Freedom.
"Georgia Tech has a long and proud connection with the United States military; today we pause to reflect on their commitment to the defense of this country and the protection of others," President G. P. "Bud" Peterson said. "To those of you who have served and those who continue to serve, we thank you. To those with family members in service abroad, we join you in the hope for a safe return of your loved ones."
The recognition was coordinated by the Georgia Tech Military Affinity Group, which formed in 2006 to promote and engage military affiliated faculty, staff, alumni, friends and students.
