History Scholars Program for College Sophomores and Juniors

An intensive American history summer program in New York City; full scholarships available

Research Fellowships for Historians

Fellows will receive $3,000 to support research in an American history archive in New York City.

Applications must be postmarked or submitted via e-mail by May 1, 2011.

About the History Scholars Program:


The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History invites college sophomores and juniors with a passion for American history, and academic excellence in the field, to apply for the Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program in New York City, which includes:

• 10 Gilder Lehrman History Scholarships to a five-week research program from Sun., June 26 to Sat., July 30, 2011.

• Up to 30 awards for One-Week Scholars to attend our program from Sat., June 18 to Sat., June 25, 2011.

History Scholars conduct primary-source research, meet with eminent scholars in American history, and explore archives and museums. One-Week Scholars will attend lectures by leading historians and discussions with professionals about careers for history majors, as well as visit select New York City archives and museums. All applicants will automatically be considered for both programs.

About the Research Fellowship Program:

The Gilder Lehrman Institute invites doctoral candidates, postdoctoral scholars, college and university faculty at every rank, and independent scholars to apply for research fellowships in American history.

For 2011-12, ten GLI Fellows will receive $3,000 each to support research within an American history archive in New York City. Research must be completed within one year of the award.

Past fellows have worked in the archives of the Gilder Lehrman Collection, the New-York Historical Society, the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library, New York Public Library, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, among others.
