The SMRC Serrano Challenge is a food eating contest that aims to raise funds by hosting a three-day event where students will eat the highest number of Serrano peppers in 3 minutes, and after the 3-day period ceases, prizes including $100 cash, a $50 Best Buy gift card, and other prizes will be distributed. Students may re-enter the contest as many times as they wish.
Free Popsicles for all participants.
It promises to be a fun three days of fiery, sweaty and teary-eyed competition, all in the name of charity. Proceeds from this event will go directly towards GT SMRC’s Vumilia Mill Project . So come out, bring your friends, and see how much heat you can take! For information on the project, click "Read More."
In the 2008 Kenyan elections, violence and chaos broke out over the results of the elections, which resulted in 800-1500 deaths and 180,000-250,000 displaced individuals. These internal refugees were displaced into camps without proper sanitation, water, food, shelter, nor support. Even now, families, often of five or more, live in makeshift huts built out of scraps of material.
The Vumilia Mill Project was created in response to the Kenyan Crisis. It is a sustainability project aimed at building a mill for residents of the Internal Refugee camps. In Kenya, mills are vital, for grinding food, providing local support, etc., but are few and far between. As such, the project will benefit the residents in two ways. First, the mill will provide jobs to individuals in the camp. Second, the mill will provide a sustainable source of income for the residents to replace short-term relief, and serve as a location for people to meet and build a community.
However, in order to build the mill, we need funds. This is where your $5 entry fee comes in. All proceeds and donations go directly to the Vumilia Mill Project in Kenya. A sustainable solution to providing a better life for those in need!
