The Georgia Tech School of Physics announces Physics in Modern Life, an introductory physics course (lecture plus required laboratory) designed for Georgia Tech undergraduates in the Colleges of Architecture, Liberal Arts, and Business. These students, who are not seeking a degree in engineering, science, or computing, can take Physics in Modern Life to satisfy one of their two “laboratory science” course requirements.Physics for Modern Life (PML) is designed to produce informed “physics consumers” by teaching students the language of physics and by exposing students to its main results in contemporary contexts. Students who complete this course successfully will be able to intelligently question the claims and assertions made by politicians, editorials, bloggers, television talking heads, and others who claim to educate and/or influence the public based on their supposed “knowledge of physics”. PML is not “algebra-based physics” or “physics for poets” in the sense that no attempt will be made to “teach physics” in the usual sense of the word. Indeed, the 500-page textbook to be used, ``Physics and Technology for Future Presidents (Princeton, 2010) by Berkeley physicist Richard Muller contains virtually no equations.
The lecture portion of PML will use graphical and other visual representations of physics results to discuss
